I hate doctors

I just signed my kid out AMA from All Children's hospital because the doctor was having a temper tantrum. Well, not AMA really, and I would never sign him out if I felt he was in immediate danger.

Charlie's been running a high fever for about 4 days. He is allergic to most antibiotics and today my pediatrician finally told me she thinks he needs to be in the hospital. So, I took him down to All Kids, where we are regulars.

4 hours later, we're home with nothing happening.

I refused to let an idiot catheterize my son. Yes I know they need a urine sample and I provided a CLEAN CATCH for him. AFTER another nurse gave me a catch bag. The doctor refused to use it, saying she doesn't use catches on kids and only caths them. That is ridiculous. I'm not a moron, I know how to do a clean catch. Then she went on saying it's not clean because he's not circumcised. WRONG answer. I wouldn't let the nurse do it because he refused to do it without retracting his foreskin which I am NOT going to allow. He went on saying he's probably got an infection because he's not circumcised, which is a load of crap.

Anyway, I refused the cath because I gave the doctor a CLEAN CATCH. Wipe penis, pee for two seconds, put bag in urine stream, remove bag before he's done peeing. I'm not a moron. I know that was clean. She refused to take it and said she wanted him catheterized. She then discharged him without talking to me again, and when I confronted her told me that if I don't do it her way she won't do anything. I requested to see another doctor and she told me she was the only one (which I know is a lie). I told them if they found someone competent to cath him, I would allow it. She refused. She also refused to take blood from an infant with a known immune deficiency who has been running a non breakable idiopathic fever for FOUR DAYS. Then she had said she was giving me something for his throat infection, but then changed her mind because I wouldn't allow the cath.

So now he's home, still sick. We'll go to another ER tonight. Friday night at the ER, my idea of a good time for sure. St. Joe's in Tampa has a pediatric ER that is pretty good.

I cannot believe that they refused care to him. Yes I know I refused the cath, but they could have still done the blood culture on him which she refused to do without the urine. Even though she HAD urine. I even offered for her nurse to take a catch, and she refused.

I've never complained to a medical board before, but I am seriously going to do it now. AJ's already called the hospital, and she's mean. I guess now I get to writing a letter. And preparing for another four hours in an ER.

We have had problems with bladder infections and my family dr will allow a catch sample from a bag but our specialist will not acept this and says there is no way to have a clean sample that way from a uncirc'd boy (because urine get trapped under the foreskin) and the only way to get a clean sample is with a cath

Good luck figuring this out.

I am so sorry for you. Espeacially that you are going to have to wait in the waitng room again a Friday night. We have an uncircumcised son as well. It is still shocking how ignorant people (even doctors) are about that. I once had a ped tell me Jackson needed to be circumcied because his foreskin wasn't retractable. He wasn't even one yet. Hello, its not supposed to be. That is horrible what the doctor did. She should have treated him as best she could while respecting your right to choose care for your son. It sounds like a power trip to me. Even if she was right ( I honestly have no idea) that was a horrible way to go about it. I would definatly call the hospital and complain. I hope Charlie feels better soon, poor baby.

Well, AJ called the ER director who told us to come back immediately and we would see another doctor (the other doctor that wasn't there, remember). They did, unfortunately, cath him, but at least it was someone with intelligence. She (director) apologized profusely and swore she would take care of it. We over heard the nurses saying "yeah, dr. X got in a fight with a parent and she got sent home..." (dr x got sent home)
They only checked his urine, no blood. That bothers me. If his temp is still this high tomorrow I'm taking him to another hospital. I know they're scared of a kid that has health problems, but it happens. They don't want to mess with him because they just don't understand how his immune system works... but *I* do. Wouldn't hurt to ask the parent.

Of course, by the time we left he had been dosed and his fever was down so he was acting normal. Hard to convince a doctor a kid is sick if he's not acting like it. Oh well.

I hope he's feeling better soon and sorry she was sooooo rude! Technically, she was right about not being able to get a sterile catch without cleaning the head of the penis but she needs to learn that sometimes you have to deal with you can get. What's the worst results she would have gotten...they culture it and get alot of things that we know grow on skin, but maybe find something else too! I really hope that he (and you two) get thru this ok.

Awww, poor Charlie! :( I hope he's feeling better and someone figures out quickly what's up with this illness. Mega {{{{get well vibes}}}} comin' his way!

Doc #1, well I feel like ranting on an on *for* you about how out of line her behavior was! But I think everything has been said, and AJ has already done what I would have suggested (and got results-- rock on!). You already know you were spot-on refusing the cath if some idiot was going to retract. I'm sorry he ended up with one eventually, but good onya for making sure it was the right person for the job. You mommies are my heroes! :D

BTDT - we took Gregory in to the ER when he was about Charlie's age. He was acting fine, but had a high fever, ect. The nurses didn't believe he was sick until he vomited all over the ER....and just kept giggling and laughing.

I hope your little one is feeling better soon! I understand your frustration with the ignorant medical staff. Reading your post made me so angry about what you went through. It also made me angry again about a past experience that I had with my son at an ER where I live. :(
