It's hard to tell how crushed the car was- it looks to me like the roof may have been cut as part of the rescue effort.

A little more to add to it (as I had nothing better to do but listen to news radio while sitting in the traffic from this accident on the way to work on Monday). As I understand it, the 4 children were in the back of the Altima, no child restraint system was found for the 5 year old. The driver and adult passenger of the Altima were both hospitalized with major injuries but were alive. It is very sad...even more so that the deaths might have been prevented if the children were all restrained properly. Our local news radio was making a big deal about 3 seatbelts, 4 kids, the need for a restraint system for the 5 year old and aired public service announcements all day about the need for boostering your children until 4'9". http://hometownstation.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19929:fatal-early-morning-crash-in-newhall-pass&catid=26:local-news&Itemid=97 Here is another article on the crash.

The truck went into the other lane, the Altima hit it, killing the 4 kids, then the Suburban rear-ended the Altima, and THEY were charged???

The accident was the fault of the Mazda truck. yes the suburban was following too close, but manslaughter? is the pickup driver being charged as well?

So tragic :(

The pick-up driver is not being charged. The accident was fatal to him as well. :( I think they are charging the suburban driver because of driving without a license and he is the scapegoat for all 5 fatalities that happened in the accident. I doubt the parents of the unrestrained minors get charged because they lost children, so that is charge enough in the eyes of some.
