seat recommendation

I was selling an item on craigslist .. a high school aquaintance happened to be the one who bought it. He happened to ask if I had any carseats for sale, he's been asking his mom & aunt to check yard sales so he can have one for his vehicle, they only have 1 in the wife's vehicle now. So ---- I know yard sales aren't the place to buy car seats, but I also got the impression money might be tight. Son is 21 months old. I think he is probably FF in wife's car .. I'm not going to even go into that with them. But I was hoping to give him some cheap seat ideas that he could look for to buy new. I would say FF only, if it goes to a booster great .. if not, they can probably switch out booster seats from one vehicle to the other at that point. Any thoughts? I was tempted to pull out one of DD 1's old seats that I'm saving to switch DD 2 to once her current seat expires and give it to him, then buy myself a replacement just so I knew he wasn't buying a piece of who knows what at a yard sale .... but my DH would kill me!

My guess is they aren' willing to go RF. Maestro is still around $80 .. anything cheaper that you can think of .... right now they are thinking yard sale prices. Does the Scenera FF?

I would have said the Avenue, but it's about the same price as the Maestro, so the Maestro would be better.

Check around. Sears.com had the Maestro for $72 with free site to store shipping and there was a $5 off coupon code. Do a search and you may be able to come up with a better code.

ETA: I could only find one for $5 off. It is sears5off50. Makes it around $72 or so after tax.

Yes, the scenera ff, but at 21 months he has maybe 1-2 years left before it would be outgrown. So if at all possible, the maestro would be a better choice.

The only seats that don't forward face are infant seats. So I'd look at the Scenera. $45, and it rear faces and then forward faces.

Scenera or Maestro, yes -- but I would definitely offer the RF Scenera as a first option with a quick, light line as to why. IE, "Did you know that the current recommendation is to keep your child RFing to age 2 -- or later, if possible -- due to spine development? If you're interested in that, I would try a Cosco Scenera, which you can find at WalMart for $45. If you're not, then try an Evenflo Maestro blah blah blah."

I think it's at least worth an attempt to mention the RFing; they won't choose it if they don't know it's a recommended option, kwim?

yeah!!! ... I emailed him and said briefly I had been thinking about what he said and I wouldn't buy a used seat from anyone I wouldn't trust my child's life with -- don't know how they took care of it, if it's been recalled or not sure you're aware, but seats expire. Recommended Maestro or Scenera. Told him Meastro would go to a booster (his kid was a peanut, would probably last awhile) or Scenera ... if they were having any more kids later, could maybe use that for other kid too .....He responded and thanked me for the info .. son doesn't ride with him often, so not looking to spend a lot, but he agreed they should buy new.
