I am not *yet* a tech, but I volunteer time every month at our local PD carseat checks. I scribe, assist the techs in teaching prarents, and get my hands on some interesting seats while demonstrating for parents. - of course the parents do the final drive away install. The senior tech (officer) will save me a spot at her next course, and even told me she would waive the local fee for me.
So the reason I love checks is that...the parents who come are looking for the help. I'm sure many advocates like me get frustrated and discouraged from IRL and virtual friends/ family misuse, and when you try to tell them, they think you are nutso! Anyway, the people at the cheks listen and want to do the best they can for their children.
Just the look on their faces when they see that they have the tools and knowledge, and go away "safer than when they came in" is just priceless, and so worth the time I give to help.
I also get to practice, implement and show the techs I work with a lot of tips for issues that come up here.
Anyway, today was a good check and I just feel warm and fuzzy right now and wanted to share.
