Not to be overbearing at all with religion, but just wondering if anyone else here makes a practice of giving up for lent. We usually give up something kind of meaningless (like sweets when we already don't eat them often) but this year I am so sick of our addiction to TV that I proposed we give up TV. The only problem was that DH pointed out I never watch TV anyway, and he said if the rest of them are giving up TV, I have to give up this site:eek: at least at home...So just wanted to see if there is anyone else who will be deprived of something they love until Easter.

Please - no offense intended to anyone this does not apply to...

Although we observe the lenten, my denomination doesn't seem to do the giving something up thing. I know my cousins who are Catholic give something up every year.

I'm giving up chocolate, coke and iced tea. Not that I have been consuming huge quantities...but if I say I am giving them up I'm sure I'll be more tempted.

When does lent start? We sometimes give something up and sometimes we don't. Depends if we remember when lent starts! It doesn't really apply to us but we do sometimes do it.

I would like to give something up, this site would be hard so I am thinking maybe snacking and junk food :D

The family is giving up fast food. We can go to a sit down restaurant (which we only do about once a month or so anyway; with 8 mouths to order for, the bill can rack up PDQ!), but no fast food.

Personally, I am going to work on more consistent discipline with my kiddos, and a lot less yelling. I think that the latter will automatically follow once I work on the former. If everyone knows exactly what to expect, and what my limits are EVERY time, I don't have to get frustrated in the first place.

I voted for giving up an activity.

I have a pretty fierce temper, and I'm aiming to get that under better control so that I cease spanking all together. It's not something I do very often anyway (less than 1x per month), but I don't want to do it at all.

I asked dh if he was planning on giving any thing up, and he laughed. I guess that must mean no. :D

We are giving up Coke. My DH and I usually have about 1 coke a day, maybe 2 for my DH. I found myself craving the sweet part of it today. Thankfully we ran out over the weekend and I just simply am not going to buy anymore, plus it will help with the budget, as it's not cheap... We are both Catholic, but haven't "practiced" it much the last few years, but with DD in a Catholic preschool, we figure we should enforce what she is learning.

Jewels, Today is Ash Wednesday, so Lent begins today! HTH! Kate

So then I guess McDonalds is out for supper then :D

Thanks for letting me know! If I had looked at my calendar I would have known!

Edited

I see I didn't give up Fast Food for lent, does McDonalds apply as junk food? For me I see junk food as chips, chocolate etc.

I'm Catholic and technically I'm "excused" from the fast and abstinence this year. I'm still going to abstane from eating meat on Ash Wed and every friday, but the fasting is OUT. This kid is hungry and lets me know when I need to eat. I haven't really thought about giving up anything really, but I would like to have a more prayerful life...so maybe I'll work on that.

Not Catholic, but this thread made me realize I missed Fasching this year in Germany. First time in over 7 years. :( Does that count as giving up something for Lent? ;)

Actually, I gave up something starting yesterday and didn't realize the coincidence -- lazing around on my fat arse. I started working out yesterday. I really want to drop the pounds I've gained since moving here along with the last 10 years of flab, see how far I can rehab my ankle area to seem normal at least, and be "Fit at 40!" :p

There's actually a serious goal in mind, but until I hit 6 months and see where I am in getting in shape, I'm not telling anyone other than DH because it's completely INSANE! It will take lots of coordination and luck, so I'm not counting on being able to do it. But If I can't, I'll at least be in excellent shape to leave deadly dull W. TX :D

I'm not catholic so it doesn't apply to me. I wish all of you luck who are giving up coke and caffeine, I know how hard those are to give up. I drank coke all through high school and haven't given it up yet. Good for you Patriot20171 on giving up alcohol! And Jewels, McDonalds counts partly for junk food, and what I mean buy that is that it fits into the junk catagory and not the food category :p :D .

Yes I know, I know. But it can be eaten as a meal (but it is not healthy by any means!) and I wanted to give up snacking junk food :)

Jewels, you can always get a salad. But man, the temptation for those french fries is too great. In fact, I'm now craving french fries dipped in chocolate milkshake.

Man, I better take a pg test soon.
