3rd row, rear facing, aux seat in 1996 Volvo 960

I have a mom on another message board asking about it.

She said there are rear head rests, and lap/shoulder belts.

She said she is pretty sure the minimum weight for use is 50 pounds, and the max weight is 80 pounds, and she has only one child who meets those requirements who uses the seat.

Is it safe?

My biggest concern is that I'm not sure of the seat is in a crumple zone, or if it's in the passenger compartment. This is the first time I've had this come up though, so I don't know if I'm missing something.

I asked her permission to post here, and I'll send her a link - she may choose to register to answer questions.

Is it a factory-installed seat or an aftermarket add-on? I think it's fine if it's a seat that came with the vehicle. I'm not comfortable with the add-on seats.

Yeah, that doesn't look like it would fit a 50# child well at all! But if, and big IF, the fit is okay, I'd be okay with the seat since it came with the car.

Hi All, I'm the Mum Gypsy posted for, so this is my Volvo we're discussing. :)

This is a factory installed 3rd row, rear facing, auxillary (Volvo's word) seat. It is intended for children between 50 & 80 lbs. There are height specs as well, but the book for my car was stollen. When my dd is in the seat, the belt fits her appropriately and she knows to stay seated, no reaching, leaning or horsing around. She'll be 8 at the end of June. She only hit 50 lbs about two months ago. There is also a built in booster in the middle of the passenger row of seats which folds down. She rides in that much of the time b/c the 3rd row seat isn't comfortable during the summer months, there are no a/c vents back there and the seat folds away which allows room for cargo.

I'm fine with these seats from a safety stand point if the child fits well in the seat belt. My only concern would be if it would be legal in a state that requires a child of your daughter's size and/or age to be in a booster seat. Obviously you can't use a booster in the third row.
