Ugh!! GOod seat... bad usage

This morning, while driving to one of my destinations, I was next to a car that had two Britax Boulevards in the back. We were in stop-and-go traffic for several miles, so I was able to see inside their car quite easily. I could really only get a good glimpse of the carseat behind the passenger seat, because that was right next to my face, but I could tell the other seat was a Boulevard too.

The child in the seat I could easily see was probably about 9 or 10 months old, forward-facing, with a HUGE snowsuit on.  He/she was way too young to be forward-facing AND he/she was wearing a gigantic snowsuit. That's TWO cases of bad misuse in one seat!!!

I couldn't easily see the other child, but it appeared that child was about 2 or 3 years old, also wearing a bulky coat. I couldn't see that one as well, though. :(

It is so sad. The parents had an awesome seat for the baby, but they were misusing it so badly! Ugh. :( :(

I think that some people believe that it is the seat that saves the child, not how it is used/installed. They think once its buckled in, nothing else matters. :(

I think you are probably right that some people think of them as a restraint. Honestly? When I first bought a carseat (when I was a nanny), I didn't see that there was any difference between the different seats. To me, they were all the same.

You know, we live in AZ, and have no snow, but i had NO IDEA, until i started my research for my newest carseats, about heavy coats, and snow suits were BAD for driving. I must say *I* am guilty of putting him in a coat (not TOO heavy) in his seat, and just adding the extra slack.

But after beoming a part of this board, and reading and reading, i'm amazed about how much i have learned in the past 3-4 days!

I'm one of those guilty ones of just buying what i thought was "cute".

NOT ANYMORE!!

Carseats, and their safety is a whole door opened up for me, and i'm glad i took the time to research!!

i know i have misused a seat before too. I wish there was just more ways to tell everyone. but also not everyone wants to hear it.

I agree as well. I have seen, time and time again, people who concerned about the seat installed well and not tighten the straps or care where the harness slots are. I think people actually believe if the child is sitting in the seat in some way, the child will be protected in a crash.

that IS funny! Everyone thought I was so nuts yelling at the TV... :(

But I think it's true, people figure $ buys the best, they don't realise a cheap seat used correctly can do wonders...
