Question newborn in a Radian?

I hate the idea of spending $100+ on a infant seat that will only be used for a few months so I'd like to avoid it if possible. However we need to fit 3 seats across in a 97 Pathfinder. We have a highback booster, a ff Radian & only enough room for another 17-18 in seat. For this reason ultimately we will be getting another Radian. How safe is a Radian for a newborn? My babies are slightly small 6lb 14oz, 18 in & 7lb 13oz, 20 in. I read that the lowest strap on a Radian is 9 in. Is that about the same or higher than most infant seats?

The RN80 or XT with the infant insert generally fit newborns pretty well. You can also add a ComfySoft to a RN65 with the same result.

You may also want to consider a Combi Coccoro.

Here's Olivia at 10#. She fits o.k. w/ the inserts in, but too loose w/out. I'm not sure a 7# baby would fit even w/ the inserts. We had an old 65, one of the first made ones and it fit at 7# GREAT! They lenghtened the straps though and somehow they don't seem to get as tight as they used to. She looks funny in that first pic, over padded! The Coccoro is a nice seat though. We have one of those and she fit great in it when she was little.

i just bought a radian xtsl for my new one coming in june. i measured the bottom slot at about 8 inches.
our friends came over with their 2 month old last week (who weighs about 7 lbs now and doesn't have a long torso at all) and he fit very well.

How does it fit RF? Try your current Radian and make sure that you can get a good newborn recline (45 degrees) AND still have a passenger in the front. If you can do that, you're in. If not, I second the Coccoro suggestion :)

Thanks for the replies. I like the Coccoro as well, however my issue is with the weight limits. My goal is to buy as few seats as possible. My kids are small so I could probably use the Coccoro until he is about 4-5 year, but then I have to dump another $200 into a higher weight limit harness seat for only 2 years or so & then still buy a highback booster later. Why does it have to be so difficult??

You could get the Coccoro for rear facing, then get a good combination seat (forward facing harnessed and converts to a booster) and only buy two seats. Depending what combo seat you got, you may or may not have to get a backless later, but backlesses are cheap.
