Used Baby Item Stores

So, there is a local used baby store that is selling carseats. I wrote her an email telling her (the owner who likes to advertise on craigslist) that it is probably a huge lawsuit waiting to happen. But more importantly that the seats may not be safe. In the pictures she uses to advertise, there a seat with an OHS. Does anyone have any idea how I can better get my point across that she is putting childrens lives in danger by selling second hand carseats with no idea of their history? Any good articles?

this is the reply i got from her...makes me sick really that she doesnt feel any personal liability that she may be selling and unsafe seat...

"Thank you for your interest! Yes I do sell car seats, And I have for
tweleve years! And as a liablty I do have a document that the costermer's
sign before they buy the car seat! Also I am here to help the pubic , when
they are low income that they can't afforded a car seat instead of going
without one! Thank you Suzette!"

While I don't agree that this is the best thing to do, I buy seats at garage sales that are in good condition and not expired and give them to people I know need them. As long as she's not charging an arm and a leg and has nice unexpired seats then I don't see anything overly wrong with it. My local consignment store only sells seats in good condition with 5 pt harness and her's are normally about 1/2 what you pay in the store. I think it's wrong when I see seats at thrift stores that are obviously expired and are missing straps and the covers are falling apart and they're trying to sell them for $15-$20. I do think that honestly most people just want to help people less fortunate but don't know how unsafe some seats can be. I've actually seen horrible seats at my local thrift store and bought them just so I can take them home and destroy them.

OMG, I wouldn't pay that much for a brand new ohs:eek: Maybe you're in a better area then I am? When I'm out garage saleing I won't pay more then $20 for a seat and then it has to be in really good shape and pretty new. Of course I never see any high end seats, just evenflo, cosco, and graco.

I dont think I would pay for an ohs at all lol. I am in Las Vegas. There are a few (def not plenty) resources locally that can get low income families safe seats. I know that if a low income mother gives birth, the hospital will give them a seat free of charge. (atleast they did 7 months ago when i took my tour)

We have that here too. When I had my first ds and was single I went through their program so I could get an extra seat. Honestly now, it scares me that those people give away seats, they give out so much misinformation like ff at 20lbs and booster after convertible seat. If I see people that I know need a new seat I don't even tell them about that program anymore:( There's a check point in the next town that gives out nice seats and is run by techs and its completely voluntary. If you can afford something that's great but if not and you need three new seats your still going to get them and they install them there and teach you how to use them.

Her response makes it sound like she's oh-so-concerned about low income folks having a carseat, that's why she sells them...but she's selling crappy OHS seats for more $$ than a brand-new Scenera! She needs to be made aware of that hypocrisy.

That's how this program gets their seats, they go straight to the manufacturer. Usually they get last years models, but they're still nicer then what the health depts giving out. The lady that runs the program actually is the instructor for cpsts in the area so its great.
