I just can't get over this.

Okay I just heard this on the news. The Highway patrol lady said around 90% of carseats are installed wrong but this one appeared to be in right. They said the carseat was rear facing in the back of the car. The baby fell 100 feet and only got a few scratches, they said he is alive because his carseat was installed right.

Oh wow. That's a pretty good testament to the power of a properly restrained child. It's sad that the driver (mother?) didn't make it... :(

This story is unbelievable. I am so glad the baby's carseat saved his life!!! It is sad about the mom, though.

Wow, how awesome is that. I have also heard the story of a mom that was walking across the road pushing her baby in a carseat in a stroller. They were struck by a car going about 35. The mom died but the baby just had a couple of bruises. Just shows you how good carseats are at taking an impact. The guy who hit them ran a stop sign, he didn't even slow down. It was on Dateline.

Think what an awesome add this would make for a carseat company. Very tragic about the mom but can you imagine the number of people who would rush to buy that seat. It would be a Kyle miller video again.

from the title of the thread i thought the baby free-fell (!!!), but it was the car that plunged 100 feet... i wonder what kind of carseat it was? an acura integra is a pretty small car, and not even the safest in terms of crashworthiness...

So sad to hear about the mother not surviving. It was great to know that she had the seat properly installed. Now, since she was obviously concerned about car seat safety, why was she driving 80 mph? What was the speed limit on that highway?

it was probably a 55 or 65 limit. are you from SoCal? if there isn't a traffic jam or rush hour bottleneck, the average speed on the freeways in SoCal is about 80, if not higher. on the san diego freeways last week, i averaged between 70 and 85, varying my speed to make sure i was "in sync" with the current speed of the cars immediately around me. the freeways are designed for much higher speed than most highways in other states. but that also assumes the driver is comfortable with his/her car at those speeds. if the road she was on couldn't support those speeds safely, she should have slowed down... not only for the child's sake but for her own.

The freeway speed around here is 65 but I'm not sure about the overpass/connector she was on. But, yes, if there isn't traffic I would say the average speed is 75.

I just watched an online video of an update to this crash. Not sure but it seems as if it may have been an Evenflo Embrace. At first I just thought the officer was demonstrating carseat safety but then they flip it over and show where it cracked in just one place. They did say in the video clip that whoever put the seat in, put it in right, and they point out that most seats are NOT installed correctly. They add that the baby was rearfacing and the rearfacing combined with correct installation is what saved this baby's life ;)

Here's the video link:
