seat position

Anyone have opinions/stats, etc on having to install a combo seat in the "outboard" position (meaning, I can't put it in the center of the rear seat cuz of a bump in the seat. Unless I modify it by stuffing towels and such and I assume that's not safe at all).

Obviously I'm worried about side impacts and having the baby right at the door, but I can't put the seat in the center so I have no choice. But I'd like to hear from others about how they feel, what they've heard, etc.

Also, our son is Just turning one this weekend, but he's big: 23lbs and 30 inches tall. Car seat says he CAN face forward now, and I think he'd enjoy the ride more that way. But it's so close to the weight requirement of 22lbs I don't know if we should wait a few more months before facing him forward.

Thanks,
Melissa

Hi,

A properly installed/used car seat in the outboard position will provide very good protection to your child. Yes, the center is the safest position as it is farthest from the point of impact in a side crash. However, if you can get a better fit on the outboard, then that position becomes safer.

The AAP now recommends leaving a child rearfacing until the upper limits of the seat are reached. My son is 25 months and still happily rearfacing. I have heard from others that often times a child is less happy forward facing because they can see you and want you and what you are drinking, etc. Here are a few good links on extended rearfacing:
