Expiration Dates...

So, the Snugride (Graco) expires at 5 years old. No? The components, except cover, expire with it. No?

Then why in the heck was the harness on my Snugride 13 months OLDER than my seat?

Am I wrong? Are the harnesses good for longer? The harness on ds's seat was older too.

No, Graco products expire in the December of the sixth year after date of manufacture.

A seat manufactured in May of 2010 will expire in December of 2016, for example.

The seat expires December of the 6th year from DOM.

They may have decided that the harness had more "wiggle room" and safety margin built into it than the plastic shell, and technology was more tried and true, and it was okay to use it slightly longer. That doesn't mean you should use harnesses past the expiration. It does mean I wouldn't worry about it.

The DOM of a seat is when the entire seat is put together. I am much less concerned about an older harness than I'd be about the plastic seat. Harnesses and buckles (at least of Gracos) are made from the same stuff that seatbelts are made from. Seatbelts don't technically expire, though it is recommended to switch them out at around 10 years, I think. So, having a harness that was made before the mold of the seat wouldn't concern me.

BTW- Graco seats should have a 6 year expiration and you definitely go by the seat's DOM not the components.
