Question The 1 inch rule

I decided to remove the SafeFit grippy pads that I put under our 4 car seats based on the low opinion that many experts here have of them.

I was able to get really tight installs in my '98 Sienna using seat belts--no movement more than 1 inch on a ff EFTA and a Combi Connection base.

I am able to get what seems like a tight install in my '04 CRV using latch on our second Combi Connection base (I haven't tried to remove the SafeFit pad from the ff Roundabout yet). My problem is that when I push on the base in the area closer to the CRV's seat back, I get very little movement. But if I push on the base in the area that is closer to the front of the car, I get movement exceeding 1 inch. Where am I supposed to be pushing on the base to test for 1 inch of movement?

The CRV's fabric seats are really really smooth (as compared to my Sienna's seats).

You should test at the belt path. In a rear-facing seat there will usually be more movement than that at the top of the seat and that is fine as long as the seat is snug at the belt path.

 Good for you on taking the mats out!

You want to check for movement at the belt path - that is where it needs to be no more than 1 inch. So it sounds like you're in good shape.
