Slap a Tech!!!

At our hospital, we have the option to go through a program called "Centering". They are group midwife appointments, and they have guest speakers come in each meeting. I'm the only one in the group who has had her baby, so I continue to go, as there are only a few appointments left, and the speakers now are ones I feel I could benefit from listening to.

This last appointment, was "carseat talk". They had an outdated video playing (constant reference to an OHS being the best option, etc). Then a tech showed up with an Evenflo infant carrier, and it was downhill from there.

He said that you must always put the handle down, so the baby won't fly up and hit it, in an accident. I asked him was he talking about all infant carriers or just the Evenflo? He said all of them. I mentioned how many manuals will give you an option of position A, B, or C. He said that was incorrect, and continued to talk over me. He got extremely irritated when I mentioned that if the harness straps were tightened correctly, the baby shouldn't be hitting the handle.

He then handed out a sheet of paper, stating 1 and 20, 4 and 40, and 8 and 80. I asked him if he had a sheet with the "new recommendations" of 2 and 30? He said that he wasn't aware of any changes, and that 1 and 20 was perfectly fine.

I told him my 19 month old was rearfacing at almost 30lbs. He said, "that's nice" and proceeded to talk about sure you CAN leave them longer, but it's not necessary.

 Every woman there except myself and one other, was a first time mom. The one other lady has her 22 month old forward facing. These people NEEDED this information! I'm so glad that most listened to me when he left... They kept asking me questions that I'm so glad I could answer with accurate information.

Oh, that's so sad. I would be frustrated too.
Glad you could give them the other side of the story and hope they do their own research too.

Oh, have you thought about writing a letter to the hospital so they don't have *him* come again?

I'm not exactly sure who to write a letter TO... It's an army hospital, so the army? Or....?

Hey I think he's on my birth board on another site!

Seriously, over the past week I've heard so many people on there giving out bad info including the "handle cannot be up on the car seat or baby will hit it" line. I would find out who is in charge of finding the people that give these talks and make sure he doesn't come back until he gets proper information. You could also try to give them an updated pamphlet that maybe they could hand out to new moms.

Can't you report techs to the local CPS office? (By local, I mean state) Even if it was on a base, they'd still have to have the state's certification, right?
