Which infant seat do people prefer and why? Graco Snugride or Safeseat, or a Peg Perego?? Just based on general use of the seat (not considering installation concerns, type of car, etc.).

Infant seats are generally recommended based on ease of use and longevity.
The two most common recommendations are the Graco Snugride 32/35 (not the 22 and the safeseat is discontinued) and the Chicco Keyfit 30, based on the above criteria.
That's not to say other seats aren't good

Of the choices you provided, I would vote for the Graco Snugride 32/35 (the same shell as the older "Safeseat 1.").
My favorite infant carseat, however, is the Chicco KeyFit 30. I vote for it because of ease of installation, ease of use, and longevity.
