getting the cover off a radian

Does anyone else have a hard time getting the cover off to wash it? This is our first time washing it, and I avoid getting them dirty, but DD has a stomach bug and vomited in the seat so it's unavoidable. My FIL ended up using a tool to unfasten the cover to the seat bottom. I was not thrilled about that since it didn't say that it would require a tool... One plastic button seems to be bent now. I don't think it will compromise the safety or anything, but I'm concerned it took these efforts to remove. Did I miss something? Is there another way of removing the cover for cleaning?

Thanks for any advice!

Nope that's the correct way to do it. I left the two plastic buttons off mine the last time i needed to wash it. The cover has stayed on just fine through daily use. just leave them off to save yourself the hassle next time. They aren't a safety feature, just an anchor for the cover.

I left them off one-- didn't have a problem until I was folding and unfolding it regularly while travelling.
