Baby left out in cold
February 03, 2007

A shocking discovery for a homeowner in Saskatoon and a story that will grip the heart of any parent.

Saskatoon Police say when a north - end city homeowner went out to start their car Saturday morning, they found a new born baby girl wrapped in a towel and a sleeping bag on their back doorstep. The baby is believed to be only a few hours old.

Staff Sgt Jean Marc Voissard with Saskatoon Police tells us the little girl was rushed to Royal University Hospital where she is now in good health.

Voissard adds based on the baby's condition and how cold it is outside, they do not think it was out there for very long.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding "Baby Jane Doe" to contact them as soon as possible.

That's very sad.

We just had a similar case here in D.C., but our temps are nowhere close to as cold as yours. It was still very sad, though.

Help Sought to Identify Child

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prince George's County police are seeking help in identifying an abandoned newborn girl found in an apartment building hallway on Silver Park Drive and getting any needed medical assistance to her mother.

The baby was found about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday by a couple who heard crying coming from the hallway of their building in the 3500 block of Silver Park in the Suitland area, police said. The child is African American, about 3 to 5 days old, and was found in a pink-and-white one-piece outfit and wrapped in a Garfield beach blanket.

Isn't there a law in the United States, or maybe it is just my state, that you can leave a newborn up the age of xx days old at any emergency department(police station, emergency room, fire station)? You can do it anonymously and without any legal repercussions.

I want to say I heard it is state by state, but it might be federal. If it isnt federal it should be. Babies dont need to be thrown in trashcans, dumpsters, portapotties, woods, junkyards, ect... or put on doorsteps. Too many of those that decide they must get rid of their baby still dont use it... and I bet it has a lot to do with recognition factor. So sad.

It isn't something that's advertized enough for those who havne't already made plans for adoption but consider abandoning their baby ~ IMO, it ties into a whole mess of other deeply imbedded social problems like domestic violence, rape, drug abuse etc. for which we also haven't found a "cure"....BABY SAFE-HAVEN STATE LISTING
Nationwide, some 105 babies of nearly four million born in 1998 were found abandoned in public places; 33 infants were found dead.

To most people the act of abandoning a child is unthinkable! We hear the stories and wonder "How could a mother do that to her own flesh and blood?" "What would possess someone to leave a helpless infant to perish alone?" The truth is that we may never understand a fearful teen with a secret, a mentally ill parent, a desperate father, a drug/alcohol crazed mind, broken spirits and wounded souls.

There is help.

Baby Safe Haven Laws have been passed in 37 states to date and more are underway!

These laws allow for a person with an unwanted baby or pregnancy to turn the baby over unharmed to a receiving organization without the threat of prosecution. Normally a hospital emergency room, responsible adult, manned fire department or other facility.

Many states allow up to 30 days for the mother to change her mind before the baby becomes freed up for adoption. This gives the mother a chance get the help she may need and provides a safe haven for the child.

Most states demand a baby be no older than 72 hours when relinquished (a few extend the age limit to 90 days).

The baby must also be visibly unharmed in order for the mother to be released after giving up her baby.

It happened here in Oregon recently, too. The baby was left on church steps. The mother could face prosecution if found because our law states baby must be left at a fire station or hospital, and must be handed over to a live person. :(
