Bundle Me crash tested?

Here's a response someone got the other day to a question about the Bundle Me...just curious about what you all think:

"I'm no expert on all this stuff but I did a search on bundle me and found the manufacturer's website http://www.jjcoleusa.com/obm.php and it said this:
crash tested- FMVSS 213 more info

and the more info said:
Crashed Tested - FMVSS 213
Tests performed on infant car seats with the Bundle Me® installed found that the car seats complied with the Restraint System Integrity and Occupant Excursion portions of the FMVSS 213 requirements.

So I would think this is okay to use with your car seat."

I told the original poster, the one asking the question, that they weren't safe and linked her to a thread on here about it. What do you all think?

There isn't an agency overseeing add-on products ... how was it tested to FMVSS 213? By who?

Unless it's sold with the carseat, avoid it.

Additionally, pretty much all safety seat manufacturers say that use of aftermarket products will void the warranty and exempt them from liability of the seat.

They could throw it against the wall and call it crash tested. Did they perform an actual crash test? Maybe. But there are no regulations on how it should affect car seats, and there is no possible weay it could "meet 213" because 213 does not apply to the product in any way.
That's like saying putting a magnent on your fridge door doesn't violate the refrigerant regulation code.

Thanks you all!

The poster loved your response, skaterbabscpst, and I have to say it made me laugh too!

I never knew the bundle me wasn't safe!!!
I have yet to know someone with a winter baby here in Canada who didn't use one! It seems like way less padding than even the thinnest snowsuit (just one layer of thin fleece). I don't know what the better alternative would be?

You could use something that goes on top of the seat, like a blanket, just not something that goes between the seat and your child. And preheating the car (sounds like an oven, huh?) helps alot, too... :)

It gets real cold where I am -- babies are perfectly content & safe with a couple normal layers (onesie, long sleeve shirt + sweat pants or one piece type outfit, socks/slippers) along with a relatively thin yet warm fleece snow suit & layered fleece blankets on top of baby AFTER buckling.... Bringing the infant seat indoors alone helps keep baby warm instead of putting kiddo into a frozen seat: this is why I like the Graco SafeSeat Step1 (it gives you the benefit of bringing indoors to room temp longer than any other infant only seat since it fits babies the longest). Fleece in particular wickes away moisture so I like it more than other materials.

It's not so much that padding as the fact that the Bundle Me type products interfere with the openings of the harness straps. So, even the Bundle Me Lite (t-shirt like material in back) is dangerous. See this thread for a great discussion and pictures - http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=29844&page=2

I'm also in Canada and it does seem that 99% use them in their infant carriers. But a shower-cap type cover or simply piling blankets over top of the baby are much safer.
