Booster Seat Misuse?!...

I'm pretty much up to date with the laws (dealing with car seat safety and all that) in Nevada-where I (and my SIL) live. I just recently discovered that my SIL has her 3 year old in a booster seat  (he is about 1/2 an inch shorter then DS and around 27 lbs). The NV law for starting to use a booster seat is 4 yrs and 40 lbs, I'm not 100% sure she knows that because when her oldest son was in a booster the law was 3 yrs old (her oldest son is 9 years old now). I'm really worried about my nephew being in a booster and my SIL doesn't want to listen to what I have to say (basically saying "He is my son, I can do what I want" type of thing).

What should I do? I shared videos with her about the benifits of Extended Harnessing and how a child who isn't ready for a booster seat can get seriously injured, but she just ignores it:thumbsdown:.

Are you sure about that? Very few--if any--states have laws about specific booster ages. Usually there's just one age/weight/height for child restraints in general.

I don't know Nevada's law, but I would guess that what she's doing is legal, if not very safe. I'm sure someone will be along with more detailed info.

Nevada law does not require that children be 4y/40# to use a booster, but does require that the child restraint be appropriate for the age and size of the child, and there are no boosters rated below 30#, so a 27# child cannot use a booster.

I looked it up under booster seat laws for Nevada and that is what it said: 4 yrs and 40 lbs. Wonder why it doesn't state that in the link you provided. Maybe it is just a suggested age range and weight.

You can provide information but that's it. I know it's really frustrating. I have a friend who let her 5 year old ride propped up on two pillows when she forgot his booster, family members who put their 3 year olds in a backless, family with a forward-facing 9 month old. I provide info, that is all. I guess you could call the cops on her, but it probably wouldn't do much.

if she's not open to any info on what is safer, then make sure she's using it properly and pray for that baby every day.... all you can do, really.

You can't do anything more than you've already done. You have offered the info, sent videos, and she knows you are willing to help. It's up to her now, as hard as that is.
