Re: Mazda5 Review

A question about the Mazda 5 - DH and I are in the market for a new car - before the end of this month.

We have an almost 2.5 year old RFing in his Marathon (he's probably about 24 pounds, so a lot of RFing time left) and will also have a newborn in April - obviously in a RFing carseat. How do you get to the third row with two carseats in the second row? We don't anticipate needing the third row very often (and it seems like there is no storage space if you are using the third row) - but I'd like to be able to get to it on the rare (or not so rare) occasions we need to do so. Seems like you couldn't push the seats up to get back there with two carseats.

Since we won't need the third row too often, I think I'd like to keep both DC in the second row - though I can imagine times I might want to put DS in the third row if I wanted to be able to sit next to a newborn.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Also, sort of related - I'm sure it's here elsewhere on this site - but does anyone have links to the latest research on how long to RF? We're getting a lot of questions about when DS will be turned. I used to think 3, but am leaning towards 4 now. I don't have a problem with ERF, but I just can't see doing that with a 5 year old (maybe I'll change my mind by then?)

Thanks for any/all help!

Re: Mazda5 Review

You can most easily access the third row by folding down the other seat and having the child go in through the hatch.

As far as rear facing, four years is a good goal. Turning a child forward facing at three isn't *terrible* but rear facing is definitely preferred.

Re: Mazda5 Review

I have a Mazda 5 and have had 2 RF kids in it for over a year. DS is RF behind the driver in a MA and DD is RF in a SS1. To get to the 3rd row we go in on DD's side before the bucket is in. I've also crawled down the center while stopped at a rest stop before to get to the 3rd row to provide entertainment (it was -40 outside) but I'm very mini - for the average sized person I'm guessing it would be very difficult if not impossible.

I also rearrange my seats around quite a bit when we have people visiting for longer than a couple days. I usually put the SS in the 3rd row and load the whole thing from the back or just carry DD in with me and then I sit beside it and then let Grandma/Grandpa sit beside DS in the 2nd row. I've also had 4 car seats in there quite a few times (I can't remember all of the combinations but if you have something specific in mind there might be someone who has or is able to try it out for you).

DD is almost out of the SS so it will be a bit more challenging. I have crawled in the hatch before though so I'll probably end up doing that or else just rearrange seats.

Re: Mazda5 Review

Thanks for giving it its own thread and the responses. We checked out the Mazda5, but actually wound up with a Hyundai Veracruz :)
