Is there a safe "gear tote"?

Is there something safe that could be put on the back seat w/ a 6 year old for his "stuff" on long trips? Something that wouldn't go flying off the seat and all over the place if a sudden stop was needed?

You could get a soft zipper bag with a handle, and buckle it in through the handle.

Buckle in his backpack, and have him keep it zipped with what he isn't using.

I think it works just fine. It buckles to the front seat and then when you remove it, turns into a little messenger bag.

I'm short so I keep my seat all the way forward, which makes it out of reach for DD when she's in her seat. But if you're taller and keep your seat back, it could potentially be reached while driving. It's just a good all-around place to stash stuff in the car. Not only does mine have small toys and crayons and stuff, but it also has a change of clothes for each kid and some diapers and wipes,
