Tall child question

my son is 14 months old and is currently in a britax marathon, which we love... however he is EXTREMELY tall (in the 125% for height) and his head is already over the top.... i am due in a few weeks with baby #2 and we are anticipating that this baby will be out of the carrier as quickly as ds (who was out at 2 months) so we are going to have to get another car seat... the question is, because my son is so tall and already over the top is it better to get him a taller backed car seat? at what point is it no longer safe for him heght wise?? is there a car seat designed for a larger child?

thank you

I don't know how a child can be in the 125%ile for height, but are you saying that at 14 months, the child's head is taller than the top of the Marathon? Where are his shoulders in relation to the top strap slots? How much does he weigh?

Pictures would really help us determine what seat is best if it isn't too much trouble. The True Fit offers much more shell height than the Marathon so that may be a better option for the child. Are you asking about a seat for the new baby or for your 14 month old? Are you asking about tall shells that rear face or ones that are forward facing only?

Can you please take a picture of your child in the seat? That would really help us make some recommendations :)

I have to wait until the morning for the pic as he is sleeping... But essentially the top of his head is level with the top of the car seat at this current time.... I am wondering if it is better to purchase a taller seat for him or get another marathon instead for the new baby....

if there is a taller seat, which is the best option

as for how a child can be in the 125% for height, our ped uses a computer program to determine the percentile and chart his weight and height.... so it will give you a more percise percentile

Do you still have your infant seat? Is your 14m rf or ff? What's he way? Are you sure its a marathon and not a roundabout?

The ma doesn't work well for most newborns. The bottom slots are 10inches, which is to tall for most newborns.

How are you measuring his head in relation to the seat? Here's a post with pictures of how to correctly measure http://www.car-seat.org/showpost.php?p=278124&postcount=1

Those pics are for rear-facing and as long as his head still has at least 1" of growing room and he is under 35# (the RF weight limit for the Marathon) then he should still be rear-facing. If he's FF, you measure the same way except it's to the top of the ears instead of the top of the head AND their shoulders can't be above the top harness slots.

If he's outgrown the Marathon, the only seat to keep him RF by height longer are the True Fit, Complete Air and Radian. Those have 35#, 40# and 40#/45# rear-facing weights respectively. You'll need to consider his weight as well when selecting the seat and the fit in your vehicle. You could get one of the taller seats for your 14 month old and pass the Marathon down to the baby once the baby has outgrown the infant carrier.

Pictures, height and weight and torso height if you have it will really help a lot of folks here come up with a good recommendation for you.
