I have no idea about infant seats anymore.

I'm shopping around for an infant seat for the first time in seven years. They're a lot different from when my youngest was a baby! This is the kind I had when Michaela was little:

Which have not only been recalled, but are apparently not safe anymore. I confess to putting all three of my girls rear-facing way too early (as soon as they hit twenty pounds, which was comparatively very young.), and I want to be safer in the future. Michaela is still in a booster seat, don't worry. She weighs 51 pounds.

What kind of infant seat do you suggest? My babies are usually between 7 and 8 pounds when they're born and I tend to have chubbier babies if this makes a difference.

You should get a 5 point restraint. (the old picture is a 3 point.) If you give the specific cars you have that may help too. I have the Graco Snugride and I like it, although it can be tricky to install with a lapshoulder belt evidently. If your babies tend to be bigger you could consider the graco safeseat which goes taller and heavier. If I were doing it over I would be seriously considering that one, but I don't have any real experience with it. Really the most important thing is for you to get a seat that you are comfortable using properly and that fits in your car.

I like the Graco Safe Seat 1. It's really easy to install, and most babies will fit in it well past their first birthday because of the 30lb limit. (My daughter would have fit until she was nearly two. lol)

I have the Graco SafeSeat 1 and my son is 17lbs and 25" at 4mo and still has plenty of room to grow. The only thing I don't like about it is that the carrier is too big to fit down into some shopping carts. If you don't mind using a baby carrier / sling then that's not a problem.

And to add to that, it's not a good idea to put a baby carrier in the shopping cart anyway (it's a very real safety issue).

Why cant you put them IN the cart? As in in the bottom portion where the food goes not in the little seat area. The seat should be low enough not to affect the center of gravity when its in the lower basket.

I think the PP is saying her seat doesnt fit down below b/c of the width.

It's OK to put them in the big basket, but if you're talking about some of the tiny carts I've seen (like at Books A Million or one of our local organic grocery stores) even the tiniest infant carrier probably would not fit.

Just make sure you get one with a five point harness and a front harness adjuster. Good choices are the Graco SnugRide, Graco SafeSeat 1 and Chicco KeyFit. The Combi seats are supposed to be good, too.

Just wanted to chime in here and say that I was able to fit the SafeSeat 1 in the main basket of most shopping carts. In some carts, I had to put it in sort of diagonally and/or leave the handle up. Smaller carts like those at Trader Joe's were a no go, but it fit in most of the standard size carts. :)

OT re: TJ's

Same here, we were so thrilled when a TJ's opened locally about 2 years ago. :) We used to drive over an hour to get to the nearest one, and it was well worth the trip.
