Harness height ?

I'm just curious--what is the reason behind having the harness at or below the shoulders while rf, and at or above the shoulders while ff. Like, what happens if someone disregards this (NOT me!!!) I've seen a few friends lately with ff kids and the harness below their shoulders b/c their parents think it "looks safer", or b/c the kid's outgrown the seat and they don't want to get a new one. Apparently, "because the manual says so" is not an acceptable reason, so what should I tell them?

Having the harness below the shoulders for RF helps prevent "ramping up" in the seat in the event of an accident.

Having the harness above the shoulders for FF helps prevent spinal compression in an accident.


Of course, you can always have the harness AT the shoulders. :)

Look at this site. If you go to page two and then look at the paragraph just to the right of figure 2, you will see a short explanation about keeping AN ADULT's harness at or above the shoulders and how spinal compression cann occur if the harness is too low.

That is for AN ADULT, whose spine has occified. Can you imagine what would happen to a child, whose spine is still soft and maliable?
