What to do, improper use of seats.

Sorry if this is not the right spot to post, please move if necessary.

I don't know what to do... There is rampant misuse of carseats at DS's school. I mean 4 and 5yr olds in only a belt or not buckled at all and yesterday a 13mo old in a bucket seat he was too big for, not harness, seat not attached to the car. There is a large immigrant population from India at his school and I am assuming by the misuse that there are very different saftey standards in India.

I feel like I need to bring this up to the director of the school, someone is going to get very hurt. What do I say? They have a piece of paper with outdated car seat info on the parents board, it has been placed there recently, so I believe others have noticed the misuse as well.

Is there a place that has short but detailed info and laws about car seat safety? I am thinking the director may be willing to put an info sheet in the preschool through 2nd graders boxes.

I am really upset by this. We are in Colorado by the way.

Thanks

Try the director of the school, point her in the right direction (on the Safe Kids website you can bring up your current state's rules) and if the issues continue you might call the local police dpt and ask them if they could drive by and issue tickets for misuse/nonuse. Good luck!

I'd contact the director & see if she'd be open to you organizing a tech to come speak to the parents or something similar. Maybe a safety fair? Something fun for the kids so the parents would want to come. Maybe some local businesses would sponsor a BBQ or some giveaways, etc.

Safety Belt Safe also has some excellent reproducibles you can print right from their website detailing best practice recommendations. They could be sent home to all students in folders with some contact info for where to find a local tech and possibly state law information, if the school doesn't want to organize a check.

ETA: after looking up CO's law, I don't know that I'd mention it at all. Just stress best practice. CO law says over 55 inches OR 5 years may be out of a seat. So, a 6 year old in seatbelt only is legal (but obviously not safe.) Yeah.
