I need a new car seat for my DD who is currently in a Britax Marathon. I want to use the Marathon for my DS who just had a growth spurt and is 30 in. so needs to come out of his Peg Perego infant seat. I wanted to order DD a Radian XTSL so that I can keep her rear facing for as long as possible. She is 2.5 years old. I e-mailed Sunshine Kids yesterday to see if they had the XTSL in Flora ready to ship but they have not gotten back to me. Does any one know if they are shipping these out already?

They are. I don't know what sites have them in stock, but I've seen pictures here where people had installed them.

However, your LO will outgrow the peg when there's less than 1" of hard shell above the head. That may have happened months ago or it may not happen for months.

Thank you for your reply. Ds still has more than 1 inch of hard shell above his head. This makes me feel much better. I was going to run out and buy a car seat tonight to use until our Radian arrived. Thanks again.

Excellent.

I had a fussy nursing baby before, so I couldn't go into the whys of it. If there's less than 1" of shell above the head then during a frontal collision the baby will ramp up and their head can go over the top of the shell. Their head to the level of their ears (the magic point for anyone in the car to need support to). Then they're at risk of whiplash. So a 30" child who is long in the torso is a lot less safe in the seat than a leggy 32" child who has inches above their head. Even though the stated limit is 30".

That is true for any rear facing seat, with the exception of the Complete Air, which allows the head to go directly to the top of the headrest, not 1" below it. But otherwise ignore the height limits. Because if you have a long torsoed baby (which it sounds like you don't, and that's awesome for carseats) they'll be unsafe before they've "outgrown" it. And if you have a short torsoed baby you'll be throwing away usable seat time.

Glad I could help! Happy seat shopping. :)
