Absolutely. It's passed the same tests as the other seats. No reason to use an expired three point seat.

Well, the person selling it is lying through their teeth about it 'retailing' for a price, because it's not sold retail. It's a sheerly institutional seat

This is a REALLY bare bones seat. It has no comfort padding to speak of (besides a piece of 'foam' about 1/4" thick on the back), a rough cover, and no EPS foam. The plastic is much flimsier than the Snugrides. The adjust in the back is a bizarre system of loops and a metal bar that must be moved, manually rethreaded and then hooked back in. It's a baseless seat and so must be installed every time (although it does have LATCH which is weird looking on an infant bucket).

But yes, it's definitely preferable over any expired seat, of course.

Why are you buying a seat for someone else? Can you simply refer them to the correct organization or let them buy their own seat? I'm not trying to sound mean; I've just discovered that you can't save people, particularly when you have your own budget to worry about.

As I stated earlier, an institutional seat costs $25 which is more than some people can afford. (Plus, it requires people to travel an hour from where we live to get the seat.) I can afford $15 and just give the seat. I know I shouldn't, but I hate looking at that crumby, old seat that the cute tiny baby rides in.

I understand that, I'm just saying it's not your responsibility to provide for these people.

I spent a LOT of money outfitting friends and acquaintances before I figured this out.

If your friends can afford to drive a car, they can figure out a way to get a safe seat for their child, including the 25 dollar seat from the health department. They choose not to. It's not your job to fix them, know what I'm saying?

If you can afford it, do it. I called all over town a few weekends ago and finally tracked down Ilana's old infant seat for Dh's cousin and his gf. They were using a seat that expired almost 5 yrs ago. They don't have their own car, it's his mom's and they're young and it was the least I could do to start the ball rolling in helping them learn to keep their baby safe through the years.

Bleeding hearts unite :) I keep trying to save the world as well. I just dipped into Christmas money to buy an Avenue for a cousin's baby that has out grown his infant seat (long story bad ending)

It's great you want to help.I'm working on this whole "it's not my place to take care of other peoples kids" BUT If they really can't afford the $15 or $25 and people like us don't help then who will :shrug-shoulders: If you feel like you need to help and have the $15 go for it. If the $15 means you and your kids may not eat one night then don't do it.

Hey, I'm a card carrying registered bleeding heart :p I just know the OP has shared about financial stretching they have to do with their own budget, so in turn I'm sharing the hard lesson I learned about 'helping' people who had the ability to help themselves and didn't. I just wish I'd learned the lesson about 1500 dollars earlier :dizzy:

I was including you in our bleeding hearts club we have to have more than one or two to unite lol and it seems to me that a lot of us go out of our way making other peoples children safe. I know she is having a hard time as well which is why I added the "if you can afford it" Part of the long drabble lol I really wasn't trying to come of snarky or anything :)

I had an Assura for awhile. Found a mom, with 2 kids. Needed a seat for kiddo #3. Tried every seat for the baby. Nothing worked. Even took all the seats out of my car. No luck. No Assura fit. So I taught her how to use it, had her show me a couple times, and gave it to her.

I guess maybe my bleeding heart has scabbed over, because the idea of a non-tech buying a seat from the classifieds in order to give it away just does not sit well with me, in a lot of different ways, including liability. Plus, people are a lot more invested in proper use when they feel invested in their seats. In other words, I agree with Maezde.

I believe in helping other people's kids. That's why I'm a CPST (and tutor, and Sunday school teacher, etc.). I also believe in boundaries, which is why I think it's a bad idea all around to choose and pay for seats for people who have not specifically asked for such help (with possible exceptions for family and very close friends).

I have bought my cousin 2 sceneras, 2 graco snugrides, 1 FPSVD(Thanks Judi), and a high back booster in order to keep them safe. I have bought my sister numerous seats for her kids and also my friends kid. I totally understand, but if you are that tight on a budget I would just point them in a direction of a local safekids maybe even offer to go with them.

I'm not so tight on a budget that I can't afford to give a $15 gift.

I was not hunting the classifieds for seats to buy. I was looking to check out the competition since I have a seat up for sale. I happened to see a brand new seat for cheap and thought I might get it. So far, the seller hasn't responded to my email, so I don't know if I'll buy it anyway.

The family I am thinking of just had their ninth child born. Mom stays at home and dad is a high school teacher. They are renting a house. The family dresses like they don't have money. I am pretty certain they don't have the funds to buy a new car seat. I figured I would normally spend about $15 on a baby gift anyway.
