Can we talk about kids in Golf Carts?

Just curious. How do you feel about kids in golf carts? They are becoming very popular in our neighborhood (a NON golfing community). There are a handful of parents that take their kids to school and pick them up in the golf cart. I'm not a fan as they are not street legal and have no restraints of any kind. I have seen little babies being held by moms or dad while they are driving the golf cart as well as toddler bouncing all over the golf carts. It makes me very nervous.

I left my kids with my dad one time and he took them around his house (in the country) on his golf cart. Ella went flying off when he went around a corner and got pretty scraped up :( I was NOT a happy mama. I would probably let them go again though sometime, but only if I was with them and he was going slower and just on grass. That time he was on his freshly laid sidewalk so you can imagine how bad she looked :(

I would let my kids go in one with seatbelts on private property-- never on the street. They're not street legal, as you say.

they are street legal in some places, depending on the particular vehicle, so that isn't an across-the-board rule, but in general, I wouldn't be thrilled with kids in them on the street.

I've seen golf carts crash before--it's not pretty. I've seen them roll over, among other things. I've seen gators (a sort of utility vehicle by John Deere) crash and roll over. The organization I volunteer with no longer allows riders under 18 because of liability issues when they crash--we've had kids get hurt on both golf carts and gators. I know I wouldn't like to see babies in arms get toted around on golf carts!

A cop posted on the CPSP listserv not too long ago. In his area, under certain circumstances, golf carts are street legal. He pulled someone over who had an unrestrained child(ren?) with them. The golf cart had one big seatbelt to go across all the occupants. There's no exception for golf carts in their state law for child restraints, and they were on the public highway, so he gave them a ticket.

People drive them around here like crazy but we live close to the country club so...It's always went on we just kinda ignore it. It does tee me off (pun intended) to see these little kids 7-14 driving them alone with no adult supervision. Most of the ones I see though are wearing the seat belts at least  Atv's are just as bad around here my friends daughter is 4 days older than ds and she has her own 4 wheeler her 7 year old son supervises

My mom has one for running around on the farm. All of us kids live on the farm, so she goes between houses with it. Hers has a seatbelt on the passenger side, so she buckles DNephews up when she takes them. They never, ever go on the road, though. The boys love going with grandma on it.
