Check out this old car seat!

Check this out. A family friend sent it to me. I'm not sure of the year or if this can even be considered a car seat. Doesn't look very safe to me!

Yup...those were 50's style carseats...hey at least you were contained in SOMETHING so you weren't wandering around the seat while mom & dad were driving.

^^^ correct! that car looks to be 40s-ish, so for them to have some sort of shild restraint like that before there were even seatbelts says something. but it does show you how far we've come in only 60 years!!!!! it is sad, though, that in anything over a 5 mph crash, that thing would be straight through the [non-safety glass] windshield!

At least the child had a chance for stoppage unlike the other passengers. Anyone see a hint of the existence of seatbelts in that photo? I didn't

But that was when to admit there were accidents would be to imply that vehicles were not completely safe. Couldn't upset the paying public that way. Ahhh, the good ole days

Scary, but in pretty good shape (from an archival point of view). Looks like it is a picture taken at an auto museum. I can see an old grill through the side window and just inside the front door I think that is likely the top of an exhibit panel.

At one time I was the ED of a rural museum with a LARGE auto collection. I remember looking through the manuals for some of the cars and it was interesting some of the things that were considered "safety features".

headlights were considered safety features, as were windshields. then wipers, then safety glass. seatbelts were a latecomer to the safety scene, around the 50s i think, and that was just optional. they didn't come standard until the late 60s or early 70s.

We also had an Amphicar in the collection - it had more water safety features than anything, lol. Life jackets and a special flashing light to be mounted when car was in the water.

I wonder what year Sears started carrying car seats?

Re: Check out this old car seat!

That's the type of seat my brother was in, in 1974ish. My mom picked it up at a garage sale. She knew it wasn't exactly a restraint, but either she couldn't find or couldn't afford a better seat. We were just talking about it on the phone the other day and I mentioned that it was probably less safe because it set him up at the perfect level to go flying out the winshield, which she laughed at. I'm glad she's able to laugh about that stuff now. She totally respects the car seats we have now and knows that the ones back then were crap, but thank goodness nothing ever happened to us.
