I have a 4 year old about that size (she is a bit taller)
I can take some pics of her this afternoon, after my daycare kids leave. Any preference to type of vehicle/seatbelt/placement?

Here's a picture of my little girl. She was under 40lbs, just a tad over 4... probably a month over 4, and can't remember her height. She's average sized though. She uses this seat every day for after school and at daycare. It's SOOO convenient for a travel seat. Usually only uses the lap/shoulder belt though. This is with the tether and lap only belt. In my husbands truck she uses it with the tether and lap only belt too.

If you don't mind that would be great. No preference on type of vehicle/seatbelt/placement since we are not sure of type of rental car we'll have (it will be a compact size) BIL/SIL is picking us up in either 01' Ford Truck (full size, not sure of tether location) or 99' Explorer (not sure of tether location)

courtfrog 2 thank you for the picture. Do you feel comfortable using the RSTV? Where we are going is a good 2 hrs from airport and it snows there (Idaho) and we'll be there Thanksgiving.

I feel very comfortable using it. Like I said, we use ours everyday. I would use it for a 2 hour trip. We've gone 1.5 hours with it and she didn't complain. She's used to it.

ETA... we don't use the headrest or the crotch strap. Those are optional. She likes it better without those two things.

Its dark now, but I can do it tomorrow. I can't help you on a compact, but can in a truck :)

My 4 year old likes her, my 6 year old hates it (she loves her regent and loathes anything else), but will use it if it is the only option. We use ours WAY more than I thought we would. I keep 1 in my MIL's car, give them to the kids when they are going to a friends house, they are perfect for traveling, and they work great in our airplane:whistle: (I know they are not FAA approved, but I hook the tether to the cargo tie downs)

I am very comfortable using the RSTV for longer drives and in snow. We do use the crotch strap but not the head rest it just annoys them. It is not great for sleeping in, as it causes major head drooping.

Very helpful, thanks! We've been debating getting one for ds1 so we can lug one less seat through the airport!

since it has no expiry and you have other LO's who can use it in the future, I'd say go for it! plus I've found mine to be super handy to keep in the car for those unexpected times when I need to give one of DDs' classmates a ride home from Brownies or something.

DH is worried about using the RSTV. He doesn't want to get into trouble for not having a "carseat" Educate me so I can tell him more (I'm to new/fresh to this, sorry)

It bears FMVSS certification wording on the vest's labels and on the instructions (stored in a pocket inside the vest.) Vests are covered as an alternate restraint method under FMVSS regulations. It IS a "car seat", or rather, a "federally certified child restraint device." If pulled over, all that is necessary is to pull out the instructions and show where it says that it meets the federal standard, blah blah blah. If they give a ticket anyway, take it to court and fight it-- you'd win.
