new infant seat reviews makes me concerned about using my old FP-SIV.

obviously since it's an 'old' seat there's no updated testing so we would never know if it would pass or fail. I had really (read, DH really) wanted to use this seat for our May arrival.

what do you think?

customer service said all SIV models were made in 2000. So worse case mine is good until next Jan. It is a 5pt seat and it was rated very well when I purchased it (only Britax came out slightly higher). No stress marks from what I can see and it's never been in an accident.

If the seat is less than eight years old with no obvious damage and has never been in a wreck or otherwise misused, and you can safely install and use it, then go for it. Fisher Price made great seats, and I know there are still a few with a bit of life left in them. Your sons are five, right? So if you got the seat new when they were babies, then you should be just fine. I woudln't replace it if you know its (safe, properly used) history and want to use it again.

I had theat seat and adored it.

One common problem to check for - look at the back of the seat at the straps. There are two sharp 90 degree pieces of plastic that routinely snagged the straps back there (near the red "release from base" deal) when the straps are tightened. ie, you'd pull the straps out, then put the baby in and tug at the adjuster strap. That harness in the back would catch on those sharp pieces and snag. If its been snagging, it'll look like the harness is starting to run or has been stressed.

Otherwise, FP gave 'em an 8 year lifespan.

(edited for typo)

Kelly,
I see exactly where you mean and now that I"ve looked I can see some wearing at the center of the straps towards the way ends of the straps (the point at the back of the seat now showing through to the inside of the seat). Looks to me like it was the part of the red release mechanism that was the sharp part that rubbed the straps.

DH is just going to have to accept a new infant seat is in our future. This one will be going into the trash.

Which seat do you guys now recommend? Which is better between the Flex-Loc and Snugride w/ EPS?
