I need information about tether anchors for a BMW

I have a 2000 BMW 323i and need to get tether anchors installed on it. Can I buy them online? Can we do it ourselves? I'd rather be armed with some info. before I call a dealer....Julie

Not 100% sure-

The tether manual says "00-Up" 3-series models all have factory installed tethers for outboard and center positions.

For 88-99 3-series models, it says:

"Three anchoring points have been provided in these vehicles (See Owner's Manual "Installing Child Seats")"

"Models may have pierced holes or weld nuts in the proper locations"

"Use a generic tether anchor kit. If a weld nut is present in the vehicle, use a 5/16" grade 5 or better bolt of appropriate length"

"Parts (individual pieces) are available for certain models but there is no kit number. Check with a local BMW dealer for applicability"

Sorry- but I can't offer much more information than that. If a kit is available, it is certainly available online. Just use your favorite search engine for "BMW Parts" and you should find a number of places. It is probably easy enough to do yourself, but I couldn't say as I've never installed one in a BMW...

Good luck!

Re: I need information about tether anchors for a BMW

Thanks Darren....yeah, DH bought this car in 8-99 (and was so proud of all the honking and thumbs up from other yuppies here in san fransico, who were so excited to see the new 323i---i dunno, they all look the same to me! lol) so it just missed the built-in anchors, and your info. explains why the one dealer he talked to about it last year was somewhat clueless....Anyway, I'll scour the car manual again, and see if my brother in law can order the part(s) (he has an autobody shop). Thanks for the help! Julie

Re: I need information about tether anchors for a BMW

I've been trying to help a dad with a similar car (2000 328i, I believe) and he is having a really tough time. His BMW dealer quoted some absurd price like $400+ to install an achor.

I believe they don't have a single kit part number. Each sub-part (bolt, anchor plate, spacer, etc) has its own part number, or something like that.

I did find this on the web: BMW technical service bulletin #721100 seems to deal with this issue. That might help you a little when talking to a dealer.

I suggested to this dad that he escalate the issue to BMW regional or national customer service. I suggested he argue for free installation of tether anchors because model year 2000's "should" have them included. Last I heard his issue was not yet resolved.

Apparently, according to BMW owner bulletin boards, BMW makes it really difficult for American owners to get retrofit anchors. Apparently it's very easy in Canada....

If you find out any more specifics, please post here.

p.s. We tried a Toyota kit, but the bolt was too short. And I'm not even certain that the threads were correct.

Thanks for sharing that info....

I'll definitely post an update if/when something tether-related happens (we might trade it in before we deal with it, but it's nice to leave the next owners with tether anchors, too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
