car seat for 2017 Honda CRV

I am a grandparent looking for a second convertible car seat for a 2017 Honda CRV. My husband and I now have one convertible car seat for our 29 month old granddaughter in the passenger side of the back seat on the car I normally drive, a Honda Civic. We need to get a second car seat for our 9 month old grandson. We temporarily used a Cosco brand Disney Apt 50 convertible car seat for him in the back seat of the Civic. My husband was extremely unhappy with how far the driver's seat had to scoot up in order for that car seat to fit correctly into the back seat. We tried it in the back seat of the Honda CRV and found it also took up more room than my husband was happy with as far as leaving room for the front driver. Has anyone installed a rear-facing convertible car seat behind the driver's side of a 2017 Honda CRV that allows for the driver's seat to be fully extended? I have measured, and with the front driver's seat positioned the way my husband is comfortable, there is 27" between the back seat and the back of the front seat, so is there any car seat that will fit in that space? Thanks!

What convertible seat is the older grandchild riding in? Is it possible to switch the positions of the two seats? If not, the Cosco Scenera Next can be installed as upright as needed for children with head control. Most 9 month olds have the necessary head control. The downside is that it isn't as long-lasting, but it should get almost all kids to age 2 rear-facing, and it got my small kid to age 4. It also isn't useful forward-facing once its outgrown rear-facing. The upside is that it's inexpensive! Many of the Graco convertible/all-in-one seats are also quite compact, especially when they can be more upright for an older baby or toddler. These seats have a variety of price points, so it's likely there is one that's in your budget. They also last longer rear-facing, at least by height.

Thanks for your reply, Melody. The car seat we are using for the 29 month old is an Evenflo Tribute LX convertible. We would not move it to the driver´s side because it takes up too much room and does not allow for the driver´s seat to scoot back far enough for my husband to fit comfortably. I found this updated information about the Cosco Scenera Next, which seems to indicate that the manufacturer has clarified directions for installing the car seat upright in the rear-facing position:

Can you suggest a Graco convertible model that might be safe to install upright in a rear-facing position?

Thanks!

Thanks for the updated info about the recline angle on the Next. That was updated after my child outgrew the seat, and I missed it! However, judging by the photos of which area has to contact the seat and my experience with it, it is quite possible to get the seat fairly upright and still be within the allowable recline angle. The "fully upright" angle the manufacturer is referring to seems to be how the Next would rest on the vehicle seat if installed forward-facing, and I understand how that would not be allowed RF.

As for compact Graco seats, I have heard good things about the Extend2Fit/Sequence/Sequel line (they have the same basic shell), and I found the original 4Ever to be quite compact when upright as well. I don't have enough experience to know if the SlimFit or Milestone are similarly compact, but they have fewer recline options, so that could make them less compact, depending on the vehicle. The new TrioGrow is likely to be similar in size to the E2F and 4Ever lines, and has a great mechanism to make for an easy installation.

What are the rear-facing goals for your 2-year-old granddaughter? Are her parents willing to consider switching her to forward-facing in order to better accommodate both grandchildren?

If she will remain rear-facing, the Graco Extend2Fit and the Graco Sequence mentioned are pretty compact. They would likely gain you an extra inch or so over the Tribute.

The CR-V just doesn’t have a ton of front to back space and many drivers will not be comfortable with a rear-facing seat behind them.

Make sure the front seat is as upright as possible, if you haven't already. That often gains a good bit of room.

I did not realize there were more replies to read, so missed them until today. I came back to post that after considering everything and further researching car seats, my husband and I decided that we needed to get a new car to fit the two car seats in the back seat rear-facing, and have enough room for him to position the driver´s seat the way he wants it when he is driving. We have been looking at the Toyota Highlander, and thinking that at least one of the car seats will go in the third row, and that should solve our problem. Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. I do appreciate it.

Rear facing in the 3rd row of the Highlander is fairly difficult. The VW Atlas and Honda Pilot are roomier and more car-seat friendly options in a similar class vehicle. I’d also suggest taking the 2-year-old’s seat with you when you try out vehicles and install it behind the driver’s seat to ensure everything works out.

Thanks for the suggestions. We looked at the Honda Pilot, but now will go back and take another look. We are Honda fans since I already drive a Civic and my husband drives a CRV. He was not enthusiastic about looking at the Atlas, so I think that will not be an option for us.

When we first looked, I did bring the car seat for the 2-year old and it did not fit behind the driver´s seat in either the Pilot or the Highlander with my husband having the seat far enough back for him to be comfortable. It will have to be installed behind the passenger side (where I will sit when he is driving). We will install the car seat for the 10 month old in the third row. It is not an ideal solution, but until the 2-year old grows enough to be in a forward facing car seat, this is what we will do. Our garage is too small for a minivan, and we do not want a car that we would have to park in our driveway. Other cars larger than the Pilot/Highlander class would not fit in our garage, so I am out of ideas.

You could install the 2 seats side by side in the Pilot in the middle and passenger side leaving plenty of room for the driver’s seat to come all the way back. Putting the baby in the 3rd row would be very impractical with just the 2 kids.
