XL 6 year old - need help finding a wide enough seat

My niece is XL and her hips get pinched in normal seats and she can't fit in a harness. We have had the Radian, Britax Frontier, Graco Highback Booster, Britax Parkway high back booster, etc. Her shoulders and hips don't fit or she is over the weight allowance. She is about 55inches tall, 114lbs of solid mass. (Before anyone judges, she is under medical care has a strict diet, tons of activity etc, it is something we are on top of but it is how she is made). What can we do to keep her safe in the car?

How old is your niece?

The Maxi-Cosi Rodifix has low sides that may help. It is rated to 120 lbs, but isn't overall any wider than those you have tried.

Depending on the child and vehicle, a backless model like the Graco RightGuide might be an option up to 120 lbs.

Unfortunately, the RideSafer XL vest is limited to 110 lbs. An EZ-On vest or other special needs product may be a possibility, but some of these can be very pricey and may be more difficult to use than a standard retail car seat.

She is only 6 years old. :/ My kids are long and lean and have been in carseats until nearly 11 years old. The problem is her weight and width. She is square shaped and solid. I fear there is no way to keep her fixed in a seat until she is tall enough to sit correctly with the correct belt position. We did look at some travel type belt positioners but I think she will go above 120lbs quite quickly. Maybe the Mifold? Like instead of raising her up, just try to get the belt in the correct position?

Hi,

Thank you for your response! We will look at these. I fear she will pass the 120 lb mark though in no time. :( She is only 6 years old and square shaped and solid. We did look at some travel type seats like the harness and the Mifold. I was thinking that maybe if we could at least get the belt positioned correctly without pinching her into a seat, she would be safe but it is so difficult. My kids are lean and we have struggled wtih this problem since she was a baby.

The MiFold will not work for her. They don’t allow the child’s thighs to be wider than than the belt guides. The maximum width for the belt guides is quite narrow.

The Clek Olli/Ozzi is very wide internally as is the Diono Solana. I’m 5’2”, 145 lb and can fit comfortably in the Clek Olli. The Olli/Ozzi has no way to adjust the shoulder belt though so if the child doesn’t get a proper shoulder belt fit, there is no way to adjust it.

The 120 lb. limit of most retail products is fairly typical of upper end maximum booster limits. The Combi Kobuk goes to 125, but I don't think it is roomier than others at the hips. It's been a while since I've seen one, though, so maybe worth a try?

Of the high weight special needs seats, the Ez-on vest is probably the least expensive. A local child passenger safety technician with special needs training may be able to help you evaluate this and give you other options as well. You can click the special needs box at this search tool:
