Maxi Cosi booster questions?

We are moving our oldest child to a booster seat today. We have 5 seats purchased and in our home to try. The Maxi Cosi Rodi AP seat is the top contender at the moment. We just have a couple questions. Does this booster require a vehicle headrest behind it? It so, is it ok if the booster touches the vehicle seat at the top and bottom but has a gap in between?

Not sure if you meant this for us, or if you had posted it elsewhere instead.

Do you mean the Rodi booster?

How old, tall, and heavy is your child?

Hi there!

The Maxi-Cosi Rodi AP requires vehicle support to the midpoint of the child's head/top of the ears including the high back mode (though the Rodifix, which has no backless mode, doesn't.)

It also requires the booster "lay flat against" the vehicle seat.

It may be incompatible in very sculpted vehicle seats or in seating positions with forward-leaning head restraints.

Would you like some recommendations for boosters that work well in your vehicle? :)

Yes. I am sorry. I did mean to post this here, but should have reworded it. We have been struggling with this transition to a booster and you all have been a great help the last week or so. Thank you!

My daughter is 8.5, 52-53" tall, and weighs 74 pounds. She has been riding harnessed in a Frontier, but is now too tall. It works well for her as a booster, but about this same time we have realized we really need a seat in my husband's car as well. One or the other of my daughters ride with him once a week for an hour or so. My other daughter is 5.5, 45" tall, and weighs 39.5 pounds. She rides harnessed in a Radian in our full time van. The Frontier seems to fit both of them reasonably well as a booster. In our van, we have three across which makes the Frontier hard to buckle as a booster. In my husband's car there will just be the one seat. So we have decided to move the Frontier to my husband's car as the once a week ride for both girls and get a new booster only seat for the 8 year old in our full time van.

We have 2 nights most weeks where we are at my mom's house late and both kids sleep in the van for the hour ride home. We also travel a lot so a lot of time is spent in the van. I really wanted to keep her in a hbb for sleeping ability and for a perceived side impact benefit.

She immediately fell in love with the Chicco Kidfit with the "magic" leg rest. She loves that leg rest. But the hbb portion would be outgrown very, very soon. We could use it as a nbb. We also have in our home right now and have tried in the garage a Diono Monterey (she doesn't like the non padded portion between the top and bottom sections when the top is raised for her), a Graco Turboboost (she says not comfortable), a Recaro Performance (very difficult to buckle next to the other seats and she doesn't like the feel of the fabric), and the Maxi Cosi Rodi AP (which she loves!).

I thought we had found the perfect solution in the Rodi. She loves it and I get to keep her in a hbb for a while longer. Then I saw the gap behind it. I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey. She sits outboard in the center row. If I remove the headrest, the gap is gone and the seat sits flat. Shuffling kids and car seats in the garage, I hastily sent the above message to Maxi Cosi and asked for help. In my lack of clear thinking (being bugged by younger kids to hurry up and frustration) I posted the same thing here without rereading it. I am sorry.

So I would love any thoughts or suggestions!!

I read some threads on here since about turning the vehicle headrest around. Can I do that in my van? If not, I guess this seat is out as an option and I am back to starting over. :(

You can try, but they should not be forced and should only be used if they lock in like that. I'm not sure that's possible in your car.

You are right. Not possible. It goes in fine backwards, but it does not lock when in backwards. Shoot. Here is the crazy gap.

I guess this one is out. Any advice on narrow, high back booster that might work for us?

Narrow? Which seating position and what seat is it next to? Captain's chair right? (We just had an 05 until this month and narrow wasn't really necessary. Unless you mean in the interior dimension?)

Also, try raising the head restraint- sometimes raising it lets a booster sit better while still providing structural support...

She's in a captain's chair in an Odyssey? Why does it have to be narrow? What's in the center? In a 2007, the center seat doesn't really fit car seats.

In any case, what about a Britax Parkway? It's at least as narrow as some of the others you're trying. Or a Harmony Dreamtime?

We had a Clek Oobr there which allows a gap when in with LATCH. It fits narrow kids well too (if they don't mind the shallow leg support- we gave our daughter an old pillow for a leg rest.)

It is in the captain's chair next to a rf radian. It is tricky to buckle the Frontier as a booster next to the radian. The Maxi Cosi is the easiest to buckle of the ones we have tried.

I did try to raise the headrest. I think because she is so tall I couldn't get it high enough to be above the booster and allow a fit. Thanks for the idea though.

This child isn't narrow. It is more a need for a narrow seat to be able to buckle it beside the radian.

Is the Radian on the bonus seat? I found it could not be properly installed there. Or did you move the other seat center?

We have a radian rearfacing in the middle. It seems to fit. The full base of the car seat is on the vehicle seat and I have it installed using the seat belt. Should we not have it there?

We tried the parkway in the store and it didn't seem comfortable. I hadn't checked out the harmony dreamtime. Running to walmart now to check it out. Thanks!

I do have the radian on the bonus seat. It is rear facing and I am using the angle adjuster. It is installed with the seat belt and tethered. It sits securely on the seat and doesn't move when pressed along the belt path. What kind of installation issues were you having that I might be missing?

The problem was with the way it sat on the seat- it SEEMED secure but since I've had other Radians come in to checks that seemed secure and turned out to be uninstalled (not even buckled in) I've developed other ways to look and make sure I'm not being tricked- like checking for indentations and what the seat would do if not wedged in- and concluded I wasn't satisfied I could get a safe install there.

Who else is in the car and where? The only place I actually liked the install on a rear facing Radian was outboard third row, or outboard second with seatbelt and an angle adjuster.

The harmony dreamtime is fairly short. My 9 year old that just barely fits in our turbo with back, has outgrown the harmony with back already.

Right now I just have my DD8 in the Frontier that is changing to something else, my niece (16 months, 18.5 pounds, I don't know how tall) rf in the radian in the center, and my DD5 (39lbs, 45" tall ) forward facing in another radian installed with the seatbelt. Baby is in the middle with my girls outboard across the center.

That is crazy that they seemed secure but weren't even buckled. I don't get any seat indentations because of the angle adjuster. It does have indentations on it, but I can't be sure how much of that is from this exact install.. Any tricks you can share to check the wedging idea?

We like to have all of the seats in the center row so no kids are in the back since we can. Also both of my girls can (and love to) help entertain little miss.
