How angry would you be?

DS2 will be 9yo next month. He weighs about 50lbs and is about 50" tall. He plays travel soccer and had an away game today. The game was about an hour away. I couldn't go because I had to work so dh took him. When dh came home ds was not with him and his booster was still in dh's truck. Dh said one of the boys on the soccer team asked if he could come home with them and play for a little bit. I asked dh why he didn't have his booster and dh said well I didn't even think about it. So my teeny tiny not quite 9yo rode home an hour away without a booster. I explained to dh as calmly as I could about why ds still needed to be in a booster and that if that situation ever arises again he must send ds with his booster. I mean are you kidding me?! This is the same dh that when I said I think we'll turn ds3 around on his 3rd b-day said he thought we should keep him RF if he still fit since he would be safer. So how could he think sending ds2 in someone elses vehicle without a booster would be a safe choice?!

Super irked... I'm still irked about lots of huge faux pas my dh has made in the carseat arena. Sigh.

I try to just feel better knowing that I know my kids know how to sit with the seatbelt properly on their lap and shoulder, even if the fit is horrible, the chance of them being ok in a crash are really pretty good. Your kids know how to sit right, too :)

My DH would do it without thinking twice. Of course, he thinks I'm over the top about everything...so that isn't saying much.

I'd be super pissed. I'd tell him to drive his ass straight to this friend's house and deliver the booster for the car ride home.

He's the same size as my 7 year old who is nowhere NEAR 5 stepping...I'd be ticked!

My hubby knows that if he made a mistake like that he better be running and ducking for cover. :) I'd be very mad. My dd is the same age and WAY bigger than your ds and I would STILL be very mad.

I'd be irked with dh, but also reminding my 9 yo that he knows he needs a booster, and that just like on the field, our family is a team. If dad forgets, and you know you should have your booster, you need to be a team player and speak up.

Agreed. My dd is very much aware and am pretty sure she would have mentioned needing a booster.

I think I'd be more irked at the child than at DH, although it would be pretty close.

At age 9 he should be able to take responsibility for his own safety. It's understandable but annoying that your DH forgot. It's unlikely that your child didn't "notice" or didn't "think about it."

Although I would also not jump to too many conclusions; is it possible that the other family had a spare booster that he used?? I mean, it's not likely unless the other family happens to be car seat nuts like us, but it's possible. Several families I know keep a spare LBB in the trunk for friends to use, though their kids are younger (more like 6-7 than 9).

Oh believe me ds and I had a nice long talk as well. He is my kid that totally doesn't get it. My dd would have never even dreamed of stepping foot in a vehicle without a booster when she was that age but ds, well not like that at all.:( He was grinning from ear to ear when he got home and told me he was fine not being in a booster and that C doesn't ride in a booster. I told him he was fine because they didn't get in an accident. So that is the reason I am more mad at dh because if I was there the situation would have never happened. I explained to ds that the next time he had better remember his booster or he will not be allowed to ride with anyone but me and dh.

I don't know... I was mad when dh did something similar once, but I actually did it myself not too long ago. DD1 rode home from school with a friend, and it totally didn't cross my mind that she needed her seat until later that evening. She always rides the bus, and I guess somehow I just didn't equate getting home from school with booster even though I knew the mom was picking her up. I have no clue, but I promise I'm normally hyper vigilant about that sort of thing. Just proves no one's perfect!

Thankfully she told me later that she tried hard to at least keep her bottom scooted all the way back.

Sounds like you handled it ok...obviously it's not something you want to have happen again.

I'd be mad at my dh, my child and the adult that took him with out his seat, just b/c he's 9 doesn't meant he fits...

I'm so sorry! Glad he got home safely and hopefully learned something!

I'd be mad at both. I've drilled it into my kids' heads that they need seats. When my second dd was 9, she stayed over night at a friends' house and needed to be driven home before I could come pick her up. She insisted she had to ride in a booster, so one was found and dd used it.

Maybe you should get him a bubble bum to keep in his backpack? And make DH pay for it? :D

It sounds like your husband is really safety-conscious when it comes to car safety and would never intentionally put the kids in harm's way, so is it possible that he really did just forget he had the booster in his car when he drove off and came home? Obviously, it's a big deal that your son rode an hour in the car improperly belted in, but instead of being angry about this one time, I'd focus on figuring out a way that his booster doesn't ever get forgotten again. I've definitely made some huge parenting slip-ups:eek:, and I made sure it was a one-time thing and they never happened again. Hopefully, your husband and son won't have any issues forgetting the booster in the future.

I'd be super pissed. It's one thing if it was an urgent, absolutely-in-a-pinch unavoidable situation, but it wasn't. It was an "elective" situation and there was time to transfer the booster.

We keep a Literider in a backpack in DH's truck, just in case anything like this ever comes up. DS1 is well "trained" and he knows to grab the bag if he's riding in someone else's car (which doesn't happen too frequently because I prefer to be the kid-hauler). He knows to look for adequate head support. Heck, he even told one of his friend's mothers her daughter's car seat was installed wrong.:p So, if DH flakes, DS1 is the responsible one.

The backpack is a great idea. Also, yay for your son. I'd love to know what the mother said, and if she fixed the seat!

I'd be super angry.

On a somewhat related note: when I found out that my 6 yo nephew (who is probably small enough to still be RF in a radian) was sometimes riding without even a booster, I was super upset. I bought him a bubble bum and SIL was just telling me this weekend that they use it all the time. <3 the BubbleBum.

I'd probably be pretty furious. But I did this once too. We dropped dd1 at my mom's house. She was taking her and my niece out to dinner. My mom has her own set of seats, but we were using my mom's TB to booster-train dd in our car. I completely forget that we had to transfer the seat because it's not a habit. I freaked when I realied what I did and panicked that my mom hadn't called about it. I called her and she said they put her in a spare lbb. I was a little panicky, because she had only been in a booter for a couple months, if that and she was in a lbb. But she had a headrest and was in a big truck. She told me the next day that she sat back really good and stayed up very straight. So it was ok. If she had been taken with no booster, I'd have lost it. My mom knows better, my dd knows better. And I should have been more on top of things.
