National Safety Month 2009

The National Safety Council designates June 2009 as National Safety Month. Each week in the month of June has a specific safety focus. Promote safety to your employees, family members or friends to increase awareness and help prevent injuries and accidents.

June 1 - 7 Teen Driving

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities - an estimated 38 percent of all teen deaths occur from crashes. Inexperience, speeding, cell phone use/texting and alcohol are some of the leading factors that heighten young drivers' risks.

Teen Driver Safety Facts and Tips

June 8 - 14 Fall Prevention at Work

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, falls are a leading cause of traumatic occupational death, accounting for eight percent of all occupational fatalities from trauma. Most falls are preventable if you take precautions to reduce your risk. Keep yourself and your co-workers fall free:
  • Wear sensible footwear
  • Keep hallways and workspaces clutter-free and clear of obstacles
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Keep floors clean, dry, level and secure
  • Maintain good lighting

June 15 - 21 Overexertion at Work

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics back injuries account for one in every five workplace injuries or illnesses. More than one million workers suffer back injuries each year. Overexertion is preventable if you know your risks. Help prevent back strain and other overexertion injuries:
  • Lift with your knees, not with your back
  • Reduce large loads into smaller ones and when possible, use mechanical assistance
  • Stack items you are carrying to lift safely
  • If you sit for long periods, make sure your chair fits correctly and is ergonomically designed
  • Exercise and get proper rest

June 22 - 28 Distracted Driving

Distracted DrivingCell phone use while driving and other forms of distracted driving account for 80 percent of all crashes. When driving, your first responsibility is the safety of those in your vehicle and others on the road. Stress responsible driving to your employees, family members and friends. Pull over if you need to use your cell phone. Avoid driving while fatigued.
