VW Beetle Child Safety

Share |

Our family car is a Volvo wagon and we are on the verge of buying a 2001 VW TDI Beetle as 2nd/commuter car. The car gets good safety ratings for front, rear and front side impact but only a 3 on rear side impact - is this alarming? It worries me for my daughter. It's also hard to believe that it can be all that safe when you look at how little exists behind the rear seats. Any thoughts, information?! Are there other compact diesels that are safer? Thanks for any help.

Re: VW Beetle Child Safety

we sold our 2001 VW bug because our son's infant and convertible carseats would not fit RF without having to move the front seats uo to an uncomfortable/unsafe position. if your children are FF it won't pose an issue.

also, if i remember correctly, there is no middle seat so both children would have to sit on the outboard, but actually - the more i think about it, the more i think there is a center seat, though it's so cramped back there that two children (whether one or both are in car seats) would be most comfortable if there were on the sides.

eta: oh, n/m. i thought i had read "daughters" not "daughter", so if you only have one child she can sit in the center. a rear end collision would worry me in that vehicle.
