regent install in a ford explorer 06

ok my friends regent just came in and we're reading the manual to figure out how to install it in her 06 ford explorer in the 3rd row. her son is 48-50 lbs so latch is out. i'm wondering if anybody has used this seat in this car or similar and if we should go with the long or short path. thanks
