Top teather installation?

Hi,

We are getting the Recaro Young Sport for our daughter. But we need top teather anchors in our cars. Can someone who knows this stuff tell me if our cars even have a place where a top teather anchor can be installed? We have three different cars that the seats might go into, all Volvos.

'89 740 wagon
'93 240 wagon
'95 850 wagon

Can someone give me some information to start with?? Must a Volvo dealer install them? If so, will they charge for it? If not, are there parts that I can install myself? Can any of these cars be LATCH retrofitted?

Thanks!

-Josh

Re: Top teather installation?

First, none of those vehicles can have lower LATCH anchors retrofitted. Only a couple of cars can, and none of them are Volvos.

I don't see pricing for the parts in the LATCH manual. Installation costs can vary widely, but they will charge for it. I don't know how difficult the installation is for Volvo tether anchors. It might be easy to do it yourself. It might not.

Part numbers:
'89 740 4Door Center & Outboard: 6812131 Part name: "Tether Hook." (I don't see the Wagon listed.)

'93 240 Wagon Center & Outboard: 3525051-3 Part name: "Tether Hook Kit."

'95 850 Wagon Center & Outboard: 9136928-0 Part name: "Tether Hook."

BTW, check the vehicle manual for more info. They may have different part numbers for the 740, as well as more details about the where and how for installation.

Re: Top teather installation?

On a different note, do any of those cars have locking seatbelts? If you get a Young Sport, you'll need to use a locking clip for a safe installation, which isn't THAT big a deal, but there are several larger seats with built in lockoffs that can make moving a seat considerably easier.

Just something to consider (I have the LATCH manual in my lap, and can't see anything different from what Ulrike found, too )

Already need to use a locking clip, so it's something we're used to. As for larger seats? The Recaro got our interest because it wasn't that large. Some of the seats we looked at were so wide that there would be no way to take two adults and the little one in the back of the car. The cars we have aren't exactly Chevy Suburbans...

Built in lockoff would be nice, but it wasn't a factor in our decision.

Re: Top teather installation?

If you're installing the seat in a seating position that does not have a shoulder belt (i.e., the center rear position in most "older" vehicles), you don't need a locking clip anyway. In fact, you cannot use a locking clip with a lap-only belt.

The 850 and 740 use a locking clip, the 240 does not.

Re: Top teather installation?

Thanks for the part numbers!!

I contacted a local Volvo dealership, had the parts ordered drop-shipped to me, and installed them last night.

Today was the first ride in the new, FF car seat! And she seemed to really like it. Was pointing at things in front, smiling, having fun, and 10 minutes later, was fast asleep. I don't think I could have asked for anything better...

Re: Top teather installation?

I'm glad you love the seat, it really is an awesome seat. I just wish you could have kept her RF longer. I know she's right about 22 months old now, but I'm sure, since she was only 18.5 pounds 2.5 months ago, that she's only about 20-22 pounds now. Still sooo small to be forward-facing.
