Tether anchors in 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a friend with a 94 grand cherokee who currently has her ff'ing seat tether attached to a point that sounds like it's not a factory tether point. They don't have the manual for their vehicle, so I thought I'd ask others here who might have some experience with this vehicle.

- is there a factory tether point underneath the seat in the middle position?
- can tether anchors be retrofitted for this make/model, and any other info I should pass on to her?

I haven't actually seen her install yet, she was just telling me about being through a seat check and the officer having to ask where the seat was tethered. From the few threads I've searched, I'm guessing this might be a cargo hook? It didn't sound like an approved point to me, but I'm just not familiar with the vehicles.

Any info would be appreciated. TIA.

eta: ff'ing seats legally have to be tethered here in Canada, so what should I tell her to do in the meantime if this isn't an approved tether point?

edited again - from the way she described it, the tether anchor is threaded between the vehicle seat bite and attached to an anchor underneath the seat that the car seat is installed on.

Re: Tether anchors in 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

For the 94 Grand Cherokee it appears there is only ONE tether anchor location (VERY odd to me), and that is in the center. The part number is 04728952AB.

Refer the dealer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details on the provisions of this policy.

I would suggest she call Jeep and get a new manual and specifically ask about the tether anchor location while she is on the phone with them. I've never heard of going through the seat bite to get to a tether anchor before?

Thanks Jenny. Does it say where bouts it would be? Directly under the seat or behind the seat or on the roof of the cargo area?

Apparently the tether is attached to an immovable anchor right now - is there anything else there that wouldn't move - cargo hooks are usually on a hinge aren't they? (for lack of a better word..lol)

I hadn't either which is why I immediately wondered if it was an actual tether location. And combined with the age of the vehicle, I figured it would only have one if the dealer had had it installed.

Maybe I'll have to see if I can get together with her over the weekend. Do you think Dodge charges for manuals? I got the sense that she didn't want to pay for one & that's why they'd never replaced it. I'm gathering it didn't come with the jeep when they bought it...

They probably do charge, but at the very least she can call them and get the info on the tether anchors in her vehicle.

Yes, I'll definitely have her talk to the dealer. Actually, maybe I'll call & ask where they'd be as if I was looking for one. Then I'd know where it's supposed to be, and if that's where hers is, then the previous owner already had it done. I'd want to know whether or not this is the tether anchor before sending her in, ya know?

It sucks that the manual isn't available online.

No, the LATCH manual doesn't say where exactly it would be located, just that it goes in the center.

Re: Tether anchors in 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Thanks guys.

So I called a local dealer who told me there's 2 locations possible on the 94 jeep grand cherokee's. Either on the under side of the seat near the seat bite, or on the floor. There is also only 1 that can be retrofitted. The dealer service dept actually described how you'd have to fold the seat to get at the anchor.

So my friend has the one that is right by the seat bite, she just has it threaded wrong. So I just talked to her and she'll fix it so it goes over the back of the seat and then attaches. So with this tether anchor location, you run it over the seat back the usual way, then fold the seat to access the anchor, put the seat back upright and then tighten the tether strap. Definitely a case of attach the tether before installing the seat..lol.

Thanks for everyone's help. Thought I'd post an update here so that if someone does a search in the future they'll have more details.

eta: The service dept I talked to was really helpful, I should've thought of calling them sooner..lol. I didn't even have to hold for very long while they looked it up.

Thanks! I had a feeling that was the case - over the seat and fold it.

Hehe, funny thing is, that the police officer who checked the seat didn't have a prob with where it was attached, just looked for it being attached. He did check the seat tightness and harness tightness though, and knew it was supposed to be tethered. I was surprised to hear of an officer just doing that - mind you, he pulled her over just to check if she was the registered owner. That's impressive too.

Weird that the LATCH manual indicates only one is available for the 94 Grand Cherokee.

Only one anchor is available - the center position, but there are 2 spots that are approved to install it in. So they can do one or the other.
