That is awesome Lea! I have just emailed Brad Chow at PJM Distribution with the same question.

Maybe we should tell Britax that Sunshine Kids is issuing new labels!

Maybe "peer pressure" will work

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

So what will the new weight amounts be? What weight for the 5 point harness and what is the maximum weight for the booster?

I have the Safety 1rst Apex and while it is sold in the US as a 5 pt. harness up to 65 lbs. it is only 48 here. I emailed Dorel and they just sent back a form saying I should contact Transport Canada. I still have time to take back my Apex which I might do if the Radian is going to issue stickers.

The Radian is only a harnessed seat that doesn't convert to a booster. However, unless you have a tall torso'd kid, you'd likely get to age 6 or 7 in it, and then if your car has headrests you could just use a backless booster. I'm guessing your car has headrests anyways since the Apex is an option for you.

Transport Canada's policy on the new weight limit is that manufacturers are responsible for certifying their seats to whatever weight within CMVSS 213 standards. So it is up to Dorel as to if they plan to certify the seat to the higher limit.

How heavy is your little one? He may outgrow the harness before 48lbs anyways... that'll be the case with my dd, and I think for lots of kids it's the same unless they're built more solid.

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

Hmmm.. My guy is 5 and about 38 lbs. He's not overly tall at 105 cm.
I like the Apex and since it goes to a booster I guess that fits my needs more than the Radian. I just hope Dorel issues the stickers - which seems unlikely at this point

I highly doubt you'll need the extra weight. You've still got 10lbs left in the Apex.

My oldest just turned 5 and only weighs 35lbs. He is also tall and has a long torso, so currently the Radian is the only harnessed seat on the CDN market that he fits into. I'm just hoping he makes it to 40lbs before he outgrows this one in height like all the others.

By the time he actually hits 40lbs (according to his growth charts), he will be approximately 6.5 years old. I have a Parkway in my van (for his friends that occasionally ride with us and weigh over 40lbs) that he will go into.

I'm not concerned with a 40lb child riding in a booster, provided that child is over 5 years old. I don't like to see children riding in boosters before 5 yrs because I don't believe they are mature enough to sit still and correctly in that booster for their entire trip.

I also believe that if you have a harnessed seat that your child fits into, they should stay harnessed until they outgrow the limits of that seat. I see no reason to 'graduate' them to a booster when there is a safer, legal (read : Canadian) option available to harness them.

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

I just called Safety Superstore/BabyProofingPlus.com to ask about DOM on seats and they assured me both the Marathons and the Radians would be brand new, a month or two old at the most. (we'll see)

BUT, I asked about the stickers and the lady said BOTH Sunshine Kids AND Britax will be issuing 65lb stickers! I wonder if this is really true?!?!

It would be awfully nice if it was! (I won't hold my breath though.)

Hi Brad,
In light of the new regulations for Canada and the forward facing weight limit being increased to 65 lbs I was wondering if you have new labels for the SKJP Radian carseats that reflect the change?

We have received our new stickers, and instruction manuals, and there are seats now in stores labeled to the 65 lbs.

That is great Brad. Can you send me out a new sticker and manual for my seat? Back in February I was talking to you and Russ (from SKJP) about my short strap Radian and you sent me out my replacement seat.

I am sorry but Transport Canada has made it clear to us, that only product that had yet to be sold to the consumer, was able to go to the higher weight. That way there would be no confusion about what went to the higher weights.

I am sorry, I do not even have any spare ones to send to you even if I could.

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

Hmph, so any new seat leaving the store will have 65lb stickers, but they're not allowed to send replacement stickers even though it's the exact same seat? How does that cause confusion? Any of the seats that could be stickered to 65lbs have always had the same design and been labelled to 65lbs in the US.

Ah well, as much as it's annoying, I guess we should just be glad that at least they finally got rid of that max 48lbs limit. And at least stores being bought off the shelf should have the new info.

*Note to self to check my radian if and when I buy it from CT.

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

More Communications from Brad Chow-Peter John M. Distributions (Vancouver BC), same location as TJs the Kiddies Store.

Kathy,

I just received your email about the Radian seat.

We are happy that Transport Canada has finally allowed us to have these great seats go up to the 65lbs just like in the USA.

However, they did make it clear that we were not allowed to send stickers to people who had previously purchased seats. Transport Canada feels that there would be too much confusion to the consumer about what seat could go to 65lbs and that it would be possible someone would be using a seat that would only hold a 40lb child to the higher weight limit.

We will be shipping out the new Safe stop as soon as they are in.

Best Regards,
Brad Chow
.....

Any comments?

Well, I'm sure that's not what any of us wanted to hear. I'm considering taking my current Radian back to TJs "buy back" program and eventually getting one of the newer ones. The kids I drive are still under 40lbs-in Cosco Regal Rides due to the small car I have, other child is in a Parkway.

So how many seats do they sell? How many of the seats that they sell now go to the new 65 lb limit? I think it is only the Marathon and the Radian. You'd think that if I sent in my little registration card then they would be sure that I knew what seat I had and therefore would qualify for a sticker. If I tried to say "Hey, that AO that I bought last year that only goes to 40lbs no matter what country I am in, can I get a 65 lb sticker for it?" Then they could email me back and say "I am sorry, your AO is still a crappy 40lb, lowest harness slots on the market, bad booster seat. There are only 2 seats available in Canada that harness to the new 65 lb limit and they are....." Grrrr. Still very, very happy that Canada now has a new ff'ing limit of 65 lbs no matter how grumbly I sound.

Thank you, I try! AO does make a great rf seat because it goes to 30 lbs (35 lbs if you get the right year). I also owned one of them.

That's the only redeeming feature... I actually really like it, but if I wasn't having a second to pass it on to, I would be pretty unhappy.

I think we all thought that... it's advertised as the last seat you'll ever need. And it makes up about 50% of the different types of seats when you go into a lot of stores... eddie bauer, safety 1st, alpha omega, alpha omega elite...

I think it's the seat a good 50% or more of parents have around here.

I'll say one thing for them - their marketing has worked and by the time anyone really realizes they're outgrowing the seat too soon it'll be too late to return the seat and get something different.

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

Grrrrrr to Sunshine Kids - I have a 50lb kid sitting in my Canadian Radian, and was assured when I bought it that new stickers would be issued:

Amy,
Radian80 slots are same height. Because children come in all shapes, sizes and proportions, a new update in our manual will allow a child’s shoulders to be above the top harness position (ONLY the top harness position), as long as the child’s ears are below the top of the seat back.

Yes, we will issue new stickers in the spring.

Thank you for your interest!

Russ

Russ,

Thanks again for replying so quickly, (insert all my blah de blah here that I cut to make this shorter) - When the Canadian Law changes (as it is set to do this spring) and seats are going to be legal up to 65lbs harnessed in Canada (based on what Transport Canada has told me) will Sunshine Kids issue new stickers for the car seats, to make previously purchased seats with the old labels legal for use in Canada? Thanks so much for your time, looking forward to my new Radian!! - Amy

That's crazy! You have it written that they would give you stickers! Did you email them again? Or have you shown them what they told you about getting a new stickers?

Re: I emailed Babyproofing Plus in Toronto about the Radian labels

Well, I have to admit, I've been flying under the radar with my two radians. I had the short strap one, and they sent me a replacement long strap one, with instructions to hang on to the old one till they emailed me with directions on how to send it back...that was months ago, and no emails followed. I've long since given the short strap one to a neighbour with a baby that she was using a horrible horrible old grubby t-sheild for, and was about to ff. So I gave her the short strap and installed and tethered it rf for her. Anyway, I'm afraid to get on their case about the stickers as they may realize I still have that old seat (althought why they would want it back I don't know). I was just hoping that the stickers would come to me in the mail...cause my DS is now topping out 50lbs, and is a really big looking kid, so it would be great to have those new stickers for my Radian. Will have to ponder what to do...
