Question Piddle pad safety

We are considering purchasing a Chicco Next fit zip from babies r us. I am interested in being able to place a piddle pad under the zip cover since it zips off. I have some understanding of the compression issue and of the idea that after market accessories are not made to the same standards as the manufacturer. Chicco does not make a piddle pad, to my knowledge so that option is out. I see that Britax and Diono both make them however I am obviously considering a Chicco seat. Someone who is certified, please help me. I am aware of the puppy pad option. Because we are looking at the next fit zip, it seems more logical to put it under the zip cover. I have heard that piddle pads are not safe yet if I buy a Britax car seat with their pad it is? Help me.

Hi and welcome! I'm not certified and I'm not familiar with the zip cover on the NextFit, so I'll leave this for someone else to respond about using piddle pads or using it under the zip cover.

When my kids were learning to use the toilet, I just unwrapped a disposable diaper and laid that in the seat underneath them. I liked it, because it wrapped up around them under the buckle and didn't add any bulk or corners sticking out. :)

not certified but can tell you the britax etc car seat pads don't hold much in the way of pee and there are better ways to attempt to prevent car seat messes.

Luckily my kid has never peed in his nextfit but I kind of suspect that if he did, the nextfit pad is so squishy, it might catch so much pee that the piddle pad wouldn't get any thing on it anyway.

Not something I hope to ever find out the answer to, though. :D

It wouldn't really do you any good to put it 'under' the zip off cover, it's still a pain to take the cover off and wash it. But putting it in the same place as the newborn add-on-pad (you have to take that pad out or not use it for any child over 11 pounds) would not be a problem as it is thin and fits nicely with the harness. You could do something even cheaper/thinner like waterproof flannel crib/lap/burp pads with a slit cut in them for the buckle and harness.
I have no problems with using a piddle pad. Not that I work for Chicco, of course, but given a properly used harness and safe, tight, install, it's incredibly unlikely to be dangerous (really, its like wearing an extra half a pair of pants, in the grand scheme of things). You probably want to wash the piddle pad prior to use and use NO softeners, that might make it more absorbent. I had the Diono pad and liquid ran right into the holes and down into the seat. Not sure what the point was of THAT! But the pp's are a little more absorby and don't claim to be 'waterproof' like the Diono does.
