Infant carseat for 98 F150 ext. cab?

We have a 1998 F150 extended cab (3 doors). We bought a Graco SnugRide (rear facing) and tried to install it in the back center (it is a bench seat in back). The base extends over the seat 1"- 2", and the back of the car seat hits the console when it is down. It fits behind the passenger seat, except for the overhanging base. This seems like it might not be safe. Does anyone know of an infant carseat that fits in the back of an F150, or is that back seat just not deep enough for any of them? Will we need to put it in the front? I know this is generally not as safe. The airbag does turn off. Thanks so much for your help. - Christine

You might be OK-

A little bit of an overhang is usually not a problem. We like to use the guideline that about 80% of the base of the carseat should be on the vehicle seat.

Unless the manual says otherwise, it is also not usually a problem if the back of the carseat is braced against something in the front row. In fact, some advocates believe this may add to the safety of the installation.

So, these may not be issues if it fits well otherwise. If you want to be sure, the best way is probably to find a certified technician near you for a free inspections. You can try our resources at http://www.seatcheck.net to find one.

Good luck!

Darren - Thank you so much for your quick response! (m)

We will definitely have both cars checked out by a certified technician. Unfortunately, there are 4 or 5 places that do it in our area, and the waiting lists for an appointment are about 6 weeks out right now. Baby is due in 4 weeks. We had no idea there would be a wait - we thought we could bring it right in. In the meantime, the car seat seems quite secure in my Honda Accord (middle of back seat), so we will not put him in the truck until we are sure it is safe. This is a great resource. I spent all morning trying to find info via the Graco and Ford websites, etc. I am so appreciative of you help!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! - C
