Can a 47 inch, 48 lb 5.5 year old sit in regular airplane seat?

He hasn't flown for a year, and last year was really squished in his car seat on the plane. Is it safe for him to just sit in the regular airplane seat? He'll be good about using the seat belt, but should we get CARES or something else to improve his safety?

He should be fine, personally I wouldn't bother with the cares just give him the window seat so if he needs to sleep he can lean against the window. If he's still in a car seat you can gat check it, but you need to inspect it for damage carefully after you get off the plane. Is he mature enough to use a booster just for the trip? If you think he would do good I would suggest getting a booster and packing the high back part in your luggage and bringing the low back part on the plane with him.

Yes, mine would if we flew and he's 5.5 years old but a bit bigger than your child.

My other son at that age used the Maestro (because we could, and there were less siblings), and we loved it. Goes only to 50 lbs. though. But so lightweight. Easy on the plane and the rental car. Then we got the Securekid eventually which goes to 65 lbs. and is also easy.
