Interesting question

Since a belt positioning booster doesn't restrain a child, I would imagine it has different rules regarding replacement due to age. So, my response is that I don't know, but think that boosters don't necessarily have expiration dates.

What you might want to do is check the boosters carefully for any signs of wear and tear--look for stress marks in the plastic and make sure they still hold the lap/shoulder belt in the correct position (check out http://www.carseatsite.com/correct_harness_use.htm for pictures).

You may also want to keep in mind that the Juvenile Products Manufacturer's Association recommends 6 years as the limit on using a child restraint.

Part of this reason is that considerable federal upgrades occurred in 1985, 1996 and 1999.
