Does anyone know if the Maxi Cosi Cabrio car seat is Legal in the US? I've heard it is and some others say it's not. I'm confused and would not want to get a ticket after the fact.

Please someone help!

Does it say on the side complies with FMVSS or something to that effect(i think i might have mixed up the letters)?

I've never heard of it...but I'm fairly new to the car seat world. Did you buy it in the US? If you didn't buy it here, it's probably not legal to use here...unless you are here on vacation.

It was a gift i received which was purchased in Germany.
I'm going to check and see if it has the codes. Other than that it has the requirements as far as the seatbelt is concerns (3-5 point seat belt, wrap arround the car seat etc.)

Doesn't sound like it's legal here. Usually our seatbelts are too short for the wrap around the back of the seat install--so it wouldn't be safe in that regard.

If you are looking for a good US seat...I LOVE the Chicco KeyFit.

Super easy install, support cushion for smaller babies, built in lock off if you don't have LATCH, can install with or without the base.

We actually have the new Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix - basically the Carbio with the European Isofix base. We ordered it from the Netherlands and went with this seat because it is the best and safesty seat available today. Our baby is extremely comfortable in the seat and the fabric is durable and easy to clean. The best features are that it has SIP, an ingenious hideaway hood, easy to adjust straps, isofix base compatible, rated up to 13 kilograms (28.5 pounds) and has small simple to use adapters to become a travel system with our Bugaboo Cameleon. I've read on other threads that people complain that it only has a three point harness - and it does- but what people don't realize is that in crash testing results in Europe and the US there is no signifcant difference between five and three point harnesses. The biggest problem is wrong installation of the seat! With the isofix system it solves the problem completely. The isofix base is solid. With the "leg" that extends to the floor of the car to stabilize the base and two versions are available - one for belts and one for 'Latch'. The seat was expensive due to the conversion to Euros and shipping and import tariffs but it is definitely worth it. Now, especially after the whole consumer reports fiasco with testing american car seats at basically european standards and seeing that the american seats did horribly, we are glad that we spent the extra money to get the Carbiofix - even if it is "illegal" in the US. :p
