No shoulder belts in back seat

Hi. I have an older car and it does not have shoulder straps in the back seat. Is it safe to use just a lap belt to secure a car seat. If not, what do I do. (buying a new car is NOT an option).

Lap Belts

It is usually fine to use just a lap belt to install a rear-facing or forward-facing carseat. Most lap belts have a latchplate (the part with the tongue that goes into the buckle) that will cinch on the belt and keep the carseat tight.

You WILL need a lap/shoulder belt when your child is old enough to sit in a belt-positioning booster, or for an adult. There are some carseats that work around that situation, and you may be able to add a shoulder belt in your car, too.

There is some more information in the FAQ link under the top of the banner, particularly Q42.

Good Luck!
