Do I really need an Infant Seat and a Convertible Seat?

Hi,

We're expecting our first baby and I'm not sure if we need to get both an infant seat and a convertible seat. It seems like everyone I know used an infant seat for the first few months, starting from day 1 home from the hospital. But then within a few months, the infant would outgrow the seat, and the parents purchased a convertible seat, and used the convertible seat rear-facing. Well, the Britax Roundabout (for example) says that it can be used from birth, 5-30 pounds, rear-facing. Is it safe and acceptable to use the Britax Roundabout from day 1, bringing the baby home from the hospital? Why get an infant seat in addition? Is it just because the infant seats can be detached from the base and can then be used as baby carriers?

Thanks in advance.

Infants seats may offer more convenience, as many models do have the base and detachable carrier. Some also find they may fit small newborns a bit better in some cases- the lowest harness slots on the infant seats are sometimes lower to accomodate newborns a bit better. Infant seats are also more likely to come with conveniences like strap pads and head supports. We generally don't recommend these items to be purchased separately, but if they come with the carseat they are safe and crash tested. Finally, some like the travel systems which come with a stroller, base and carrier.

A rear-facing convertible is also a very safe option for a newborn, as long as the baby is above the minimum weight limits. Rear-facing seats are inherently very safe, whether it is an infant or convertible model.

Some parents swear by a carrier, others really don't like them. It is mostly a decision of personal preference.

Good luck!

Darren,

Thanks for the quick response. I have a feeling I'll go with an infant only seat, and then switch to a convertible.

Regards,
