Question car seat tethers

Hello there-
My husband and I recently purchased a Britax Roundabout G4 car seat for our 13mo. My husband installed the seat according to the directions (rear facing), but I am not please with the tether system. With my car, we would be using the rear latch tether where the straps block the path to get our son in the seat. There is no other place to tether the seat in my car, so my question is... is the tether necessary? From what I read on your review of the car seat it seams that since our son is less than 40 pounds we could do without the extra tether. Any information, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As long as you are in the U.S. rear-facing tethering is optional. I believe it is mandatory for certian Britax seats in Canada, but am not 100% sure. Where you route the tether to the FF tether spot behind the seat it is called "Australian Tethering" and when you tether it to a place in front of the seat like a seat track it is called "Sweedish Tethering". Here is a website that explains it far better then I can.
